Nature, people, animals, emotions, any of these things can inspire a person to paint, draw, to
create! I always am amazed by how beautiful our planet can be. Yes, there are many places that
are run down, and it is hard to find the beauty in, but there are wondrous places on Earth that just
take your breathe away and spur creativity. I was inspired by a woman that created beautiful
pieces of art from the beauty she found in nature, and I was lucky enough to come across one of
her own favorite pieces in my Humanities book!
Inspiration Piece
My inspiration artwork was
Rust Red Hills
by Georgia O’Keeffe in 1930. She painted this
image from being inspired by the red mounds of earth that she saw from her back porch in
Abiquiu, New Mexico [ CITATION Knu16 \l 1033 ]. O’Keeffe lived in New York previously and
when she moved to New Mexico it was a much different scene that inspired a large number of
her paintings. She refined painting with oil on canvas that left a smooth transition between the
colors. She explained the beauty of nature not in words but in paint,
“The abstraction is often the
most definite form for the intangible in myself that I can only clarify in paint . . .. I found I could
say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way
—
things I had no words for”
[ CITATION DrF22 \l 1033 ]. This painting was almost abstract, but the title gives away what the
subject is intended to be [ CITATION Knu16 \l 1033 ]. “Rust Red Hills.”
My Art Piece
My painting
Southwest Hillside
was made with acrylic paint on 12-inch canvas. I mixed
my colors together to try to imitate O’Keeffe’s oil colors. I love the abstract feel of the piece and
the colors are so much fun! It was quite therapeutic to create this painting and calming that it was

as simple as a hill in New Mexico, but so magnificent to look at and to paint! I tried to keep
similar shapes, I have never been to New Mexico or have seen the hills in that area, so I used
O’Keeffe’s interpretation as my guide.
Comparing the Two
The thematic connection between the paintings is that they are both painting of the hills
of New Mexico. Both art pieces have similar coloring, which is a formal element, although
O’Keeffe’s coloring is smoother and more earthy toned than my own [ CITATION Mar18 \l 1033
]. The lines and shapes, also formal elements, are similar in the hills of different colors stacking
up in the center of the artwork[ CITATION Mar18 \l 1033 ]. I created a few more clouds in the
background, maybe taking away from the hills a bit, unlike O’Keeffe’s painting that has the hills
as the absolute main idea of the painting. I do not know how much the different materials used
would affect other peoples’ views, but for me I feel like the acrylic is nice but feels amateur and
the oil painting feels more refined and smoother, more appealing to the eye. I like my colors
more, they are brighter and O’Keeffe’s colors are more muted and earthy, more realistic. I
enjoyed painting this piece as well as I am sure Georgia enjoyed painting hers! It would have
been more enjoyable viewing this beautiful landscape in person though!
