Ms. Lopez spoke about giving students the space to interpret readings and ask questions. While she asks questions, she also tries to guide her students towards what the text and the plot is trying to teach them. She likes to emphasize plots and themes. How do you approach selecting books for your classroom library in terms of diversity and representation? Ms. Lopez spoke about choosing books and stories where characters reflect and look like the students in the class she is teaching. She is in a bilingual Spanish speaking class. She understands that students learn better when characters and stories they read reflect the life they are living. Have you noticed student engagement or understanding changes when exposed to diverse texts? Ms. Lopez spoke about how most books in the library are Spanish. She let me know that students respond well to stories that are in Spanish and even the students who didn’t speak Spanish enjoyed and responded well to those books.
