Role of Coaching and Mentoring in My Motivation
Halfway into my 20-year military career I had lost motivation and was considering separating
from the military.
I was attending an Army school and was ready for a career change that would
allow me to spend more time with my family.
One of my instructors recognized my burnout and
that I needed significant change in my career.
We began to meet a few times a week to have a
snack and chat.
He showed me many opportunities the Army had available that I qualified for
outside of human resources where I was working at the time.
This provided me hope and
encouragement to continue my career.
I only attended this school for six months, but our
relationship has lasted for 11 years.
This relationship would be classified as mentoring rather
than coaching because it was an informal relationship that promoted positive growth over a
period of years rather than weeks or months (
Rubbi Nunan et al., 2023).
There were several skills that this mentor employed to engage with me and effectively lead
me down a new career path within the Army.
First, he practiced active listening.
This is a
crucial element of communication to not only show interest in what the speak is saying but to
also keep the mind of the listener engaged in the conversation (
Lester & Vecera, 2018).
This
active listening helped to build my trust with the mentor.
Another technique that the mentor used
was assertiveness in his guidance.
There were times that I disagreed with his advice, but he
calmly and directly explained why I was wrong without becoming emotional or frustrated with
me.
Hughes et al. (2022) posited that a leader being able to respectfully acknowledge the points
of others while calmy maintaining his position is critical to building respect and trust.
The
respect and trust this mentor built with me through assertiveness, active listening, and taking the
time to show a personal interest in me caused his influence on me to be effective in his secondary
goal of helping the Army retain me as a Soldier.
