Module Two Question 1
Describe one of the beliefs and values of the Navajo as illustrated in your readings.
One value of the Navajo population is that one must hear the perpetrator's side of the story
and understand the motives behind the crime committed. The Peacemakers Court then
appoints a group of people from the community that talks about the situation and finds
appropriate ways to restore the criminal's behavior by understanding and helping him change
rather that relying on traditional punishment practices.
Module Two Question 2
Describe one way in which the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into
the societal structure on the reservation since regaining some autonomy in the 1970's.
After gaining more autonomy the Navajo tribe incorporated additional ways to heal the body
and the mind compared to the medicine based on science. The population relies on healing
the body with herbs, songs and ceremonies. When someone suffers of a mental illness the
tribe performs ceremonies where they paint traditional myths on the sand and a person named
spiritual leader helps the person connect with the gods.

What beliefs and values can be found in your culture? How do these beliefs and values
influence your day-to-day life?
In my culture family is important and the wellbeing of the family members is emphasized.
This value influence the way I plan my week because I reserve time to spend with my family
doing outdoor trips, playing or having movie night. Religion is also important in my culture
and it influences my life. Sundays are considered the day of the Lord and my family and I
attend church every Sunday and we spend afternoons together relaxing without doing any
work related activities or household chores.

Adopt the social science perspective to create a list of questions about this issue. Write at
least two questions each from the point of view of a psychologist, a sociologist, and an
anthropologist.
