Walk Through Summary L. Curtis
This particular teacher is new to the district this year. I interviewed her several times for a
math position at my in-person campus within my region. As expected, there has been a period of
many learning curves. Many teachers new to our environment find it difficult to adapt to our
non-traditional setting. This particular teacher expressed having teaching experience with at-risk
youth in various settings. This has not been evidenced thus far in the classroom. The teacher has
not been able to understand curriculum and instructional strategies when heavily coached. She
has standing meeting with me, the lead teacher, and other master teachers of her content withing
the school district. All of the support has been to no avail as evidenced by my constant
observation within the classroom.
During the preconference collaboration the teacher presented me with lesson plans that
for all grade-levels that she has currently enrolled. There was a plan in place for what I was to
observed. During the actual observation there was little to no evidence of the planned lesson.
Upon entry the teacher was seated behind the desk and students were on chromebooks. The
planned bell ringer was not administered. She quickly guided students loosely to the planned
activity that centered around graphing functions and analyzing the difference between x/y axis on
a calculator. Students lost interest and began to wander the room. After the task was completed,
minimally, by some students they were put back on student laptops to complete tasks on a
software program that is called ALEKS. Some students in the room began to play dominoes.
After the walk-through I was very straightforward with this teacher. I detailed what I saw
and gave many options of how to improve the critical areas. I explained how to use a timer to
guide transitions. We also went into great detail about the “workshop model”. Pairing students in
groups according to similar grade-levels will allow for direct instruction of all students with
equity. We also spoke about classroom management, and both agreed that currently there is none.
She looks forward to gaining coaching in that area.
Walk Through Summary T. Cantlon
This teacher is another new addition to my school district. He began with us a little over a month
ago. He was hired to teach Science after I had the position unexpectedly open. Mr. Cantlon is in
his first year of official teaching. He recently obtained a probationary certificate through an
alternative certification program. He has ten years of experienced being a substitute teacher so he
will need a great deal of support throughout the year. In addition to me he will have the support
of the lead teacher and his coach through the alternative certification program.
Mr. Cantlon planned a great lesson on atoms and their components. His intentions were to
have students replicate the atom on paper before having them create 3-dimensional models later.
Mr. Cantlon showed a video that overviewed atoms and no one was tuned in to the video. He was
distracted with conversations with students. Late students entered class and he began a
conversation about an award that they had earned which deterred the entire lesson. When he
encouraged students to refer to their notes for clarity on the atom and its function some students
had no notebooks or some had loose leaf papers. Notebooks were observed to be strewn about
the room and notes that had been turned in were nowhere to be found by the teacher.
Afterwards me and the teacher counseled heavily on each noted occurrence and how to
go about it in a more constructive way so as to keep the environment centered on learning. I
provided some organizational techniques (and ordered tools) that will help keep items that are
needed by students streamlined and organized. The teacher is eager to learn and incorporate any
strategies he is presented with.
