God’s Story Reflection Assignment

1.
Describe two examples of ways that American culture has influenced the general understanding
of the gospel in the United States (i.e., salvation gospel vs. kingdom gospel).
One example of how American culture has influenced the gospel in the United States is how
unsaved non-Christians believe Christians look at or judge them negatively. The love of Christ is
not shown through how they talk or act. They believe that the Bible is a book of judgment and
when they begin to follow Christianity those old worldly tendencies have to be given up, and
most people have a hard time giving up their old ways. Many Christians tend to be more relaxed
when it comes to topics like lgbtq, abortion, and living a worldly lifestyle, taking many parts of
the Bible out so that it fits whatever makes them comfortable. This affects the “salvation gospel”
where the individual’s relationship with the Lord is seen as an as needed basis and they don’t
need forgiveness. The second example is the salvation gospel that is preached by many well-
known preachers. They teach that God rewards his followers with materials, earthly possessions,
and wealth. Things like this show the kingdom gospel in which material possessions and wealth
are evidence of God.
2.
Discuss two passages of Scripture (or two parts of the Story with scriptural references) from the
Old Testament and how they have expanded your understanding of the gospel. The first must be
a specific example from Professor Dent’s lectures (referencing the Act of the story and the
scriptural passage).
The second must be from the textbook (referencing the Act of the story and
page number from the book).
Act 1 – Genesis 2:4 Another name for God is introduced as “the Lord God”.
God reveals himself
to Moses (Exod 3; 6: 1 - 12) through the burning bush. This was God calling Moses to lead the
Israelites out of Egypt to freedom. What this helped me understand is that God can use anything
in today’s world to reveal himself to me or others. You never know when or how He will reveal
Himself; He works in mysterious ways.
Act 3 – Genesis 5:1; 9:6 This is when Adam and Eve became naked, and God kicked them out of
the Garden of Eden as a result of their sins. This scripture portrays nakedness as shame and
because of sin, we are separated from God but through grace, he shows them compassion. This
has helped me understand as a result of my sin I have been separated from the Lord, but
through this same compassion and grace, He gives me new life through His son Jesus.

The second must be from the textbook (referencing the Act of the story and

Act 4 – Mark 1: 1 – 8 When we are saved, we are called to spread the Gospel with other
believers just as Jesus and John the Baptist did when their public mission began. After salvation
God calls on us to be the salt and the light of the world, this is the beginning of your personal
mission. This has expanded my understanding of the gospel through being one who should be
going out like them and completing my personal gospel story by spreading the word of the Lord.
Matt 28: 16 – 20 Like the previous Gospel listed here Jesus is commanding His disciples to go and
make disciples of all nations. This is instructing me to be one of those who goes out into the
world and makes disciples of others and teaches them in the ways of the Lord. When doing this
we are to be careful of other cultural backgrounds and make sure we don’t present the Gospel in
a way that comes across as bad the first time we tell them.

The textbook identifies several ways that culture influences our reading and/or understanding of
the story of the world.
Discuss two cultural insights from the book (with page number
references) and how they impact your understanding of the story of the world.
Being a Christian, it's important to read the Bible and understand the truth behind its teachings.
The Book of Revelation has been looked at wrong by many. Hollywood’s version of the end times
shouldn’t be something we believe or follow; we should focus on the fact that the Kingdom is
coming. It's important to understand that the goal of being a Christian is not just to get to
heaven when we die. Salvation is greatly misunderstood in today's generation; it's seen as a
passage to live life in sin and refrain from keeping a close personal relationship with God. As
Christians in today’s culture, it is important that we maintain a strong and healthy relationship
with the Lord.
5.
In the textbook, the authors identify specific ways Jesus instructs and prepares his disciples to be
citizens of the kingdom distinctively in contrast to this world.
Identify two examples that are
given. Discuss at least one specific example of how to live this out today.
Christ first spoke to his disciples; he asked them to repent and to "follow me". He asked them to
leave all their earthly possessions behind and commit to his teachings and commands. Page 114,
believers submit to Christ, and they will start to have the fruits of the spirit. Following Jesus
today is just as difficult as it was then. The gospel today is heavily watered down, making it
difficult to understand what it means to "follow me".
We need to approach our devotion to
Christ by rooting ourselves in the Gospel.
