ORIGINS OF THE WORLD
INTRODUCTION
For all humans, there is always a quest among us
—
where do we come from? How is our world created? And in almost every culture in
the world, whether it is modern or ancient, we may have, or at least tried to find, answers to this question. In Unit 3, you have learned
about
Cosmology
, the modern scientific way to explain the beginning of our Universe. You have also heard some
Origin Stories
from a
few native tribe, or different culture. But there are so many more to tell, and each one of these Origin Stories tells not just their explanation
to the beginning of their world or people, but also the connection to their environment, their culture, and their ancestry. In this lab, you
will find two Origin Stories of a group of people, or culture and compare them. These two Origin Stories can be chosen from your own
heritage or one that you are interested in.
Keep in mind that we do NOT judge
people’
s cultures that are different from ours
, nor there
is a right or wrong answer to the question of the beginning of the world. We are here simply to respect, learn, and relate.
LEARNING GOALS
The points below are the expected topics to understand by the end of this lab period. Remember to review these points before completing
the lab. If you do not understand one, review the steps that cover it and discuss with your instructor.
•
Describe two Origin Stories that either you represent or are interested in
•
Identify the common points from the two stories
•
Think and explain why it is important to have an Origin Story for all humankind

LAB 4-2
STEP 1: ORIGIN STORIES OF TWO CULTURES
1.
Do a 15 to 20 minutes of research online to find two different Origin Stories. These two Origin Stories can be from the culture that
you represent, or you are interested in. They can be from YouTube videos, articles, websites, or if you have some books in mind,
please make copies and include them when you hand in your lab next week. Keep in mind that your sources
must
be legit and not
from unreliable websites. If you are not sure, please double check with your instructor.
2.
If your story involves
Indigenous Peoples
, please keep in mind that these stories are necessary to come from the voice of Indigenous
People,
ie
narrated or published by Indigenous People themselves in the videos, and not just about Indigenous People.
3.
Please save your Origin Stories somewhere easily accessible on your device. And write down, or copy and paste, your references
clearly for
Step 2
. For example, keep the names and the links of the YouTube videos or websites your found.
4.
You will form small groups after you finish the following Step, and share what you found with your group at the end of the class.
Please again keep in mind of our Class Norm
—
Respect and Learn. Think before you speak.
5.
Please omit sharing if the Indigenous
Peoples’
Origin Stories you found are only shared during the winter time in their tradition. You
can double check with your instructor if it is appropriate to share your Indigenous
People’s
Origin Stories.
STEP 2: IMPORTANCE OF OUR ORIGINS
Let us now think about the importance of Origin Stories, and why they mean so much to each one of us. Answer the following questions
for each of the two different cultures that you found.

Describe briefly, in
at least 2 complete
sentences, about
their Origin Story.
[4pt]
Gaia is the goddess and the personification of the
Earth in Greek Mythology. She emerged from Chaos
and is the mother goddess. The gods and goddesses
are all descendants of Gaia and her husband (also her
son). She had the original 12 Titans who overthrew
their father and were later overthrown by their
children who are the most well-known.
There was a great flood, Raven was all alone, and
Raven (the trickster) devoured food and felt
mischievous. He found creatures hiding in a shell, but
they were afraid of him, he used his skills of being a
trickster to coax and coerce the little creatures
(humans) to come out. The Raven then went in search
of girls but they both seemed to fear each other.
Eventually, they overcame their fears and began
mingling, the Raven was protective over these first
people, by providing for them.
Can you identify
some key points or
significant lessons
from the Story?
Please give your
answer in 1-2
complete sentences.
[2pt]
The collection of this origin story teaches us about
right and wrong. Gaia is significant today because the
Gaia hypothesis is taught in school. The Gaia
hypothesis basically explains how the Earth is a living
system and how it stays in balance.
The Raven is a trickster who frees humans from a
clamshell, the Raven is a greedy and mischievous
creature who provides for humans. Without meaning
the Raven teaches humans his tricks and a way to
survive. Another key point is that the Raven had the
urge to protect the first people and help them by
providing for them and teaching them.

LAB 4-4
Can you identify any
common parts from
the two Stories?
What are the
similarities and the
differences?
Please give each of
your answers in 1-2
complete sentences.
[2pt]
Both Gaia and the Raven both emerged from chaos in a way. The Raven altered chaos to order, and Gaia
became the world of order. Gaia's story
didn’t
discuss the creation of humankind that came later after a
change in power between the Titans and the gods. While the Raven was responsible for finding humans and
helping them succeed and learn how to survive. I think a big difference is that the Raven supported and
provided for mankind, unlike the Titans and the gods who believed they were far more superior than
mankind.
