Project 8-4-1: Project 2: Short Answer Response about Human Expression Ⅰ. Explain why you believe humans have a need to express themselves through created artifacts. A. Explain the larger human need to express using the insights you gained from studying your artifact. B. Detail how a person and/or concept encountered in this course has informed your explanation. I believe humans are naturally curious; we crave diversity, we want to explore. As humans, we want to belong, be accepted, to be recognized, to be heard, to be valued, feel important and respected. To fulfill or satisfy these human needs, humans express themselves by creating artifacts. Digging deeper, focusing on the bigger picture of the human need to express ourselves through artifacts; for example, our own unique characteristics or individual traits, own perception or self-awareness, values, customs, and religious or spiritual beliefs and cultural influences. Asking the “big questions” - it is in our human nature to be curious and ask questions. For example, what is the purpose and meaning of life, what happens after we die? Does what I do on earth matter? Does my hard work pay off in the afterlife? These thought-provoking questions led to creative expressions in some of the artifacts from the Ancient World (i.e., Shabti Dolls (Workforce in the Afterlife), Portrait of the Boy Eutyches). Leonardo da Vinci: Leonardo was intently curious about the world and how he approached life. He was devout in his beliefs, and he appreciated life. Seeking and respecting knowledge. He had multiple interests, i.e., mathematics, science, and art. He was a visual thinker; he used human expression and realism in his art; he was constantly thinking, observing, experimenting, and using this theories and observations in his creative expressions. For example, his painting of the Last Supper. Leonardo created this artifact to express an exact moment in time, using art, his imagination, using his knowledge of math, science, and art, creating a visual experience to 1
capture the human expressions at the precise time Jesus reveals his betrayer (during the last meal he has with the apostles). {i.e., symmetry, aerial perception, human expression and realism, relationships and the grouping of the apostles (Jesus and John, James the Greater, and Judas).} Moreover, motives of self-achievement, self-esteem, need of others (patrons), compensation (he was earning a living by creating art; he was commissioned by the Duke of Milan to paint the Last Supper), popularity and fame (to be commissioned and be sought after to create additional works of art), and respect as an artist. Ⅲ. Explain how you think the act of human creative expression impacts and is impacted by the culture in which it was created. A. Explain the larger reciprocal relationship between human creative expression and the culture in which it was created using the insights you gained from studying your artifact. B. Detail how a person and/or concept encountered in this course has informed your explanation. The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci was created during the Italian Renaissance Period, where there was a renewed interest in the creative arts. Much of the artwork created during this period was commissioned by the Catholic Church, and the universal theme was Christian theology. Leonardo’s creative expression in his painting of The Last Supper impacted the culture in which it was created; it was influential in the biblical and religious art of that time, his use of aerial perspective and sfumato, and the degree of realism in expressing human emotion. In the Realism Period, the culture evolved from ideal to the real, and the act of human creative expression of real-life situations was impacted by the culture in this period. For example, Gustave Flaubert’s novel, Madame Bovary. During the sixties, political corruption, protests, more liberal views on marriage and relationships, and the Vietnam war, were all influential in the human creative expression in music, i.e., folk music, and as demonstrated in the creative expression of Bob Dylan’s song, “The Times They Are a-Changin”. 2
In contemporary culture, human creative expression is impacted by the cultural advances in computer technology, wireless technology, and digital photography and images. Human creative expression in movies and musicals are examples of how creative expression is impacted by culture, the use of computer technology to create a mix of animation and human interaction in the popular Disney musical, Beauty and the Beast. Ⅲ. Explain how you believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with today. Be sure to be specific about the issues you are addressing. A. Use the insights you gained from studying your artifact to explain how creative expression can impact today’s issues. I believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with today. (Both positive and negative impact). Some of the issues we face today are drugs, violence, racial and social injustice, political and religious tensions, violence against religions (ISIS, Islam, Christians), human and animal cruelty. With my chosen artifact, the Last Supper, and the deep religious theme that it expresses, I believe the religious connections this artifact expresses could have a (negative) impact on today’s culture and issues, due to the violence towards Christians today, i.e. ISIS, the attack on Mumbai in recent years, destruction or religious artifacts in India. Further, Animal rights activists, such as PETA, and the SPCA, use graphic videos and pictures to demonstrate animal cruelty, which can create a positive impact towards advocating their cause. Artists like Andy Warhol used human creative expression in his opposition and the controversy around death by electrocution (Sing Sing Prison in New York) in his artifact, “Big Electric Chair.” “The Bird Cage”, by the creator, Xian Mei Qiu; this artifact had an impact on issues of sexualization and repression of women in society. Most recently, the issues in immigration, 3
