ARH 151 Module 7 Writing Assignment
The piece of artwork I have chosen from module seven is
Sketch I for Composition VI
created by Wassily Kandinsky,
and the artwork I have chosen from the last thirty years is
Dispersion
created by Julie Mehretu. Kandinsky’s and Mehretu’s works turned a piece of
abstract work into something with deep meaning.
Composition VI
was made in 1913. This piece
has a large color palette, both bright and dark. There are no defined shapes, but the meaning
Kandinsky is trying to convey is events such as baptism, flood, destruction, and rebirth.
Dispersion
was made in 2002. This piece also has a bright and dark color palette. There are some
shapes and line work in this piece, but there is no accurate depiction of something. Still, the
deeper meaning is about power, history, and the formation of personal and cultural features from
the globalized world. They both have a sense of movement and fluidity in the arrangement of
forms and lines. The contrast between the two pieces of artwork is that
Dispersion
has a lot of
blank open space, while
Composition VI
does not, the entire canvas is filled. Their works differ
in their type of artistic intent, Kandinsky’s piece exhibits spiritual and emotional themes, while
Mehretu’s exhibits cultural and social systems themes. The historical context for Kandinsky
creating
Composition VI
was based off the Old Testament with the story of the flood; this linked
to Kandinsky’s hope for cultural rebirth in Russia since during this time Russia was going into
the Balkan Wars (Harris). The historical context for Mehretu creating
Dispersion
was based off
the terrorists’ attacks in New York in 2001, she was showing the diverse public groups that went
through something traumatic; changing the way the world worked (Mix).
