Journal: Careers and High Expectations
Choose a career from each of the three components of the Criminal Justice System
POLICING
:
School Resource Officer- Is a sworn law enforcement officer employed by the local/county law enforcement agency assigned to a elementary, middle or high school or combination of all three) to ensure the safety of students and staff of the school. SROs also provide education, crime prevention, support, conflict resolution between staff and students or peer groups if needed. They
also assist in emergency situations, facilitate communication between parents, students and or staff if a conflict or situation arises. School resource officer (SRO) are authorized to make arrests
and detain student and or staff if situation merits such actions. Professional standards include but are not limited to skills, kind but stern personality as well as effective writing skills, articulate communication skills, ability to listen and lend support and be a good role model for students and to take charge in situations that require his professional skills in calm and respectful manner.
COURTS
: Victim Advocate- Is a trained allied professional who has a skill set to support victims of crime. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, informing victim(s) of court proceedings, how the CJS works, and the process from arrest to trial and beyond if applicable. They also provide recommendations and referrals to available resources both in the community as well as through special victim services within the CJS. They help victims understand forms and how to fill out paperwork pertaining to the case they are involved in as a victim, provide emotional support to assist the victim of the crime feel important, empowered, and understood. It is also important to help the victim feel safe and secure within the CJS and the process. Victim advocates also may be on call 24/7 if needed to any victim of a crime day or night (Victim Support Services, n.d.).
CORRECTIONS:
Probation officers are sworn court/law enforcement personnel who oversee the release of a defendant who has either served their “time” and has “community control” orders from the court or who has been given probation vs sentencing in jail/prison by the court. The primary
responsibility of the probation officer is to uphold the law, maintain reporting to the courts regarding clients in his caseload, instruct and ensure follow through of all orders by the court that
client must meet or exceed due to probation status. Probation officer are responsible for scheduling random drug/alcohol testing, preform tests, set, and meet offender at office, do home visits (surprised or planned) Must make sure all conditions of probation under the court order are
being fulfilled and status of such requirements i.e.: Counseling, AA, curfew, no drug or alcohol, payment of restitution and all fees due the court or victim assistant program as ordered. If at any time a client is not in compliance with the court’s orders, the probation officer can contact the court and take a warrant out for a probation violation. Lastly, he/she is responsible for explaining
what is expected by the court orders, how to accomplish any specific services needed whether by
verbal or phone referral information or helping, assisting in planning for such services. Professional standards also include having a strong and positive relationship through community outreach programs and organized events and to involve the community whereas they are available should information need to be shared to protect the ensure public safety. A personality of strong leadership, helpful and resourceful as well as a caring but professional personality to assist and support clients to be successful in not only completing his/her probation requirements but to become an active, law abiding citizen and to be part of the solution and not a continued problem with law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Ultimately, he/she is charged to serve and protect the community as well as overseeing the completion of court orders and meeting all required stipulations to be able to finish probation and be released from any form of controls under the criminal justice system.
How do the three careers work together?
The police, victims advocate and probation officer all work together as to serve and protect the community, enforce, and uphold the law and to support and assist the community in preventing crime and making the community safe for all.

With the way of recent and ongoing high-profile fatalities between the police and community which has resulted in mistrust, of law enforcement and increased public outrage. C.O.P.S works towards rebuilding trust and mutual respect between the community and law enforcement at large.
