TITLE OF YOUR PAPER FIELD EXPERIENCE A 2 Clinical Field Experience A: Inquiry and Collaboration Inquiry <Title of Your Paper> This first paragraph is your introduction (Approximately 150 words) . Begin with a strong grabber/intro statement go get the reader’s attention, and end with a focused purpose statement for the paper. The Purpose Statement is similar to a thesis statement, only slightly different. The main ideas of the overall essay must be included in your introduction paragraph. From those main ideas, the Purpose Statement provides the purpose, scope, and direction of the paper. First Headin For my Clinical F ield E xperience A , I monitored a high school English classroom of grades 9-12. The school that I observed at is a smal l local private school, so its normal for multiple grades to be in class at one time and for class sizes to be small. I think this small class size is able to work for my mentor teacher because she often utilizes both the inquiry-based learning method as well as the cooperative learning method. She decided on these methods, because they flowed easily into the environment she set for her classroom. Students benefit from being able to discuss and actively communic ate their thoughts and opinions on certain topics. They also enjoy working together and helping each other complete assignments. It also helps that the students are arranged in small groups as a seating method that allows them to collaborate much easier. g There are many strategies that are used in order to integrate other humanities into a lesson. For a recent assignment, students were able to incorporate their artistic side and incorporate art into their assignment. The students were learning about the concept of a hero in literature and as an art assignment, they were able to draw a hero of their own creation. Social Studies and History are also integrated into lessons as well. With this strategy students are able
TITLE OF YOUR PAPER FIELD EXPERIENCE A 3 to learn about historical events that are significant to t he literature being read, as well as learning about cultural and social contexts that are significant as well. In order to asses student learning before instruction, my mentor teacher opens the class with a discussion question and a review of what was learned the previous day which students must respond to. Depending on the students response, this gives her a framework of how to pace the lesson for the day. So if she needs to revisit something that students may not have properly understood then she can before continuing on. D uring lessons, she often takes moments to ask students discussion questions and let them talk as a class to express their thoughts on what is being read and to see of they are comprehending what is being taught. After a lesson, towards the end of class she may either have students complete a small quiz or end the class with a discussion question and let students reminisce on the lesson. To engage students in learning, my mentor teacher uses a strategy that I really enjoy. You can tell that she took the time to connect with her students and learn their personalities, like and dislikes. She uses thes e connections to relate to her students and to tie what they are learning to her interest. For example, if students are talking about a popular show then she uses tropes and themes from that show and connect it to the literature so that students can better understand certain concepts. This keeps students interested and excited because they get to talk about the things that they enjoy but it is flipped to help them learn. When it comes to grouping students for an assignment or p roject, since the class sizes are so small she typically allows students to choose their own partners. Since students are already seated in a small group format this is very easy to do. Collaboration After meeting with my mentor teacher and having observed her classes many times before. There are methods and strategies that w e have discussed that I feel as though I would incorporate in my future classroom. Those methods being inquiry-based learning and project-
