Living Lives in FL Write up a 500-1500 word description and analysis of your family or kinship group that incorporates important bits of information from your list or table and diagram.
Word
length has no value by itself. You may write more or less, as long as you describe and analyze your family or that of your informant clearly and vividly. Explain how the family works as a group. Here are questions to include in your analysis. If you are working with an informant, ask
them these questions and take notes for this write-up:
I am as close with my extended family as I am with my nuclear family, more specifically I
am close to my grandparents on both sides. Comparing my father’s side of the family's relationship with my mother’s side, I am closer to my mother's side of the family. I am closer to my mother’s side because I prefer their company over my father’s side. There was an important matriarch on my father's side of the family. My father's grandma was what held his side of the family together and also helped get the family through desperate times. After her passing, my father's side fell apart, losing contact with one another. My mom moved from Florida to North Carolina to attend Campbell University, other than that my family on both sides have been in the
United States since the 1700’s. Identities my family expresses are Christian values and a vast majority of my family is white. My father’s side of the family expresses conservative viewpoints given the extreme religious background. My mother’s side of the family is religious, but it is expressed differently. My mother’s side also has more liberal viewpoints. For both sides of the family, we come together to celebrate holidays, birthdays, weddings, celebrations, and times of mourning. A majority of the time the holidays are celebrated on different days with different sides of the family, rarely do my mother’s side and father’s side meet when celebrating a holiday. The important values of my father’s side of the family originate from the stereotypical Southern culture. Growing up, it instilled that I would marry a woman of the same race, raise my children to be Christian, and use a biased lens over my world because the difference was deemed wrong. My mother’s side of the family never instilled rhetoric in me. I was taught love, kindness, and indifference. My kin group is important to me, but only certain family members are. Growing up and experiencing the taught hatred towards different individuals can impact your viewpoint towards loved ones. Although I do love them, the love is expressed differently. Coming out of a restricted
family can impact the relationships between them. Change is an important component of life, and when people refuse to change for years, despite learning, it is hard to see eye-to-eye with a
lot of current-day issues. I am close to certain family members; however, others I have learned to keep my distance from.
