Attending a recent Brentwood Union School District board meeting, I gained valuable insight
into how the education system is shaped. I also gained insight into the decision-making processes
that influence it. This reflection essay discusses the items discussed at the board meeting. As an
aspiring teacher, I will also examine the attendees, the presentations, the arguments I agree with,
and the lessons I have learned from attending the lecture.
During the meeting, the Brentwood Union School District Board of Education held public
hearings and appeals for the proposed Brentwood Union School District local control
accountability plan for the academic year 2023-2024. As a result of these sessions, community
members could provide feedback on resource allocation, program development, and goal setting
for the district. This would increase their involvement. In addition, an expansion of the school
was on the agenda, including hiring an additional principal. As a result of increased enrollment
in the middle schools, a vice principal was also appointed to one of the middle schools. The
Kennesaw group presented their audit results following the public hearings. They focused
primarily on the district's equity and diversity initiatives, which were their audit's focus.
The board meeting was attended by several key stakeholders, including board members,
administrative staff, the board secretary, the board attorney, and the director of human resources,
among others. As well as these officials, students, parents, city officials, and local business
leaders participated in the event in addition to these officials. A diverse representation of
attendees attended the meeting, which ensured that various perspectives and voices would be
heard during the decision-making process. A group of education professionals were present at
the event, which was unsurprising for me as an aspiring teacher. However, the engagement of
ordinary citizens who demonstrated their commitment to the community's educational well-being
captured my imagination.
During the meeting, presentations were conducted civilly. Their main focus was motivating
students for the upcoming academic year. They also provided updates on the progress of the
upcoming elementary school, which will take place in the coming year. In their presentation, the
Kennesaw group emphasized the importance of the district taking into account students' diverse
needs within the district. In order to meet these needs, it advocated additional funding. As an
educator, I agreed with the arguments put forth by the Kennesaw group, as their approach
aligned with creating inclusive learning environments and addressing academic achievement
gaps across student populations.
As a future teacher, I learned valuable lessons by attending the board meeting. I learned the
importance of active involvement in the education system when I became a parent. In order to
stay informed about the decision-making process, I ensure that I attend board meetings. In
recognition that schools rely on taxpayer funds, I discovered that it is important to take part in
these meetings to have a voice in the decision-making process. In addition to holding the board
accountable, I also ensure the members are held accountable. In addition, the meeting reinforced
the need for open communication with students, encouraging them to become active participants
in their education by becoming informed about the topics that are important to them.
Based on the insights gained from the board meeting, I will be able to shape my future approach
to teaching. There are areas of improvement within the education system that I will convey to my
students in order to motivate them to improve it. During the project, I will encourage them to
actively engage and advocate for their needs. To empower my students to take ownership of their
education, I can set an example by attending board meetings, staying informed about the school
system, and setting an example by attending board meetings. Furthermore, I will share relevant
