1.
List three cultures or subcultures you identify strongly with and rank them from most to least significant in your life. These can be national, ethnic, religious, and they can include subcultures or groups related to your personal interests.
-
Christianity Culture- I relate with this culture in that I am a Christian. I grew up going to church and now my husband and I attend a non-denominational church. Christianity plays a big part in our life choices and how we treat others. The idea that there is a God is
a big factor in how we act and treat others; in that we want everlasting life in Heaven. -
Rural Culture- I identify with rural culture in that I was raised in a tiny town in Southeast Missouri. Rural culture is centered around the idea of community and the term “it takes a village.” You may not be able to get out of Walmart without saying hi to everyone in town. While it can be overwhelming having the whole town know who you are, it is also very refreshing knowing you are never alone. Our tiny rural town has come together to support our community and myself in ways that a big city town wouldn’t. Driving the backroads along the farms and stopping in to see Bill at the local general store are the staples of rural culture. When I get lost in the big city life, I escape to my hometown to receive that good ole’ southern hospitality which helps to ground me and bring me back to what matters.
-
Collaborate Culture- I identify with collaborate culture in that in my current career field; nursing, you have to work as a team. From the techs assisting the patient in everyday tasks, to the doctors prescribing medications, patient care can’t be properly carried out without the support of each team member. If one of my nurses drops the reins on proper patient care, my patients can’t get better. Each person plays a vital role in the hospital and
without collaborate culture, patient care would fall at the waist side.
2.
Identify one representative object from the humanities for each of the cultures or subcultures you identify with.
-
Christianity- The Bible
-
Rural Culture- Tractor or the General Store
-
Collaborate Culture- Team Building Events/Retreats
3.
Explain how the cultural object reflects the culture in which it exists. Consider which aspects of culture have relevance for each object: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on.
-
Christianity- The Bible: the bible reflects the culture in that it is essentially the basis and history book to Christianity. It is also the explanation of how God entered the lives of Christians through a biblical timeline. More so, the “how to” manual of Christianity. Religion is the relevance for this object.

Rural Culture- General Store: the general store reflects the culture in that every small town has the tiny general store with the old man sitting on the rocking chair on the porch.
The general store usually has bicycles laying outside, thus symbolizing the kids stopping to get candy. The feelings of safety, community and welcomeness at the general store are all feelings that one cannot get in a big city. I would never ride my bike to the Walmart near me. I might get shot. I do not expect to get a hello from a stranger at the Walmart here in the city. Society would be the aspect in culture that is relevant.
-
Collaborate Culture- Retreats: retreats reflect the culture in that the collaborate culture mindset is one of teamwork. Part of teamwork is going on retreats to build that team mentality. I have been on multiple retreats where there were rope courses up in the trees and you had to work as a team to make it through the course. Social organization would be the best aspect of culture to represent this object.
