Week 2 Discussion Discussion Question 3: When did women get to be so controlling as presented in the clip? Compared to being controlled in the stories "Trifles"   OR "   The Story of an Hour"? I think women got to be so controlling when they figured out that they deserve just as much respect in the household as men already get. Being a wife, and mother, is hard work and it takes a lot to run a household, so someone needs to be in control of making sure the household runs smoothly. In the stories “Trifles” and “The Story of an Hour” times were different back then. The men would wake up, go to work, come home to a clean house and dinner, go to bed and wake up to do the same thing the next day and all of the days following. On the other hand, women have to wake up, take care of the children, cook clean, shop, et cetera. Back then even though women did the most work they did not get the same amount of respect as the men did because they were not the ones bringing in a steady income to the household. It meant nothing that a house ran smoothly, and seemingly without chaos, because women were not the bread winners. Nowadays, women control most of the aspects of the household, and when they have something done a certain way, they would like it to stay that way. Whether it’s the laundry, dishes or room organization, it becomes important to keep things that way because it helps control a chaotic home. Discussion Question 4: In your opinion how   would the ending of "Trifles" and "Story of an Hour"   been different if they had used his advice of being “simple direct and right to the point”? I think that the ending of “Trifles” and “The Story of an Hour” would not have ended in death if the wives in the two stories would have been honest about their feeling towards their husbands. If Mrs. Mallard had told her husband, or even her sister, that she had felt imprisoned in her marriage then maybe she could have gotten out of that situation and she would still be alive. If Mrs. Wright had told a neighbor that her husband was rude towards her and it made her feel caged in her home and marriage someone might have understood and help her get out of that unhappy household. Furthermore, if Mr. Wright was honest with Mrs. Wright about not liking the canary because it sang too much, then Mrs. Wright could have set it free. Instead, Mr. Wright wrung the canary’s neck, and because of the Mrs. Wright killed her husband.
