IMPACT OF LEARNING STYLES ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT 1
IMPACT OF LEARNING STYLES ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT 2
Topic Statement
Learning is an essential aspect of human life, implying that no individual can survive
without learning (Esia-Donkoh et al, 2015). In today's world, learning is a crucial factor in
defining one's success or failure. In Ghana, a student's academic performance is crucial in
determining their placement in higher educational institutions and programs of study. Junior
High School is a critical level in the Ghanaian educational system as it is at this stage that
students make decisions about their future (Anamua-Mensah, 2002). Therefore, learners need to
identify their learning styles during their junior high school years to improve their academic
achievement in the Basic Education Certificate Examination. This will enable them to gain
admission to Senior High Schools and make better choices in life. In recent times, students'
academic performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination in the Greater Accra
Region has been abysmal. It has been discovered that their learning styles greatly influence their
academic achievement (Deniz, 2013). Based on the above enlightenment, it can be inferred that
to improve students' academic performance, it is important to assist them in identifying their
preferred learning styles for studying. Students' poor academic achievement in the Greater Accra
Region may be due to their inadequate learning styles which impact their academic performance.
Practices, Policies, or Procedures that Relate to the Topic
Research studies have shown that students have different learning styles that impact their
attitudes toward learning and academic achievement. Psychologists have identified over 70
different learning style models, each consisting of at least two learning styles that affect students'
academic performance in various ways. Examples of such models include impulsive and
reflective, divergent and convergent thinkers, and field-dependent and field-independent.
IMPACT OF LEARNING STYLES ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT 3
Students may exhibit different types of learning styles such as perceptual, cognitive, personal,
and compound learning styles. According to the National Council for Curriculum and
Assessment's Teachers Resource Pack for Primary 1-6 (2019), several factors can hinder a child's
learning. Some of these factors include a lack of teaching and learning resources, teachers who
are unaware of their students' learning needs, and students' learning styles preferences.
According to a study conducted by Zuberu et al, (2019), students have both holistic and serial
learning styles. This means that their learning patterns are mostly influenced by the teaching
methods and learning conditions they are exposed to. The study also found that learners can be categorized as either deductive or inductive and
that they require a comprehensive understanding of a subject, or a global perspective before they
can narrow down to a specific concept. It has been established that a student's learning style can
significantly impact their academic performance. According to Hugo's (2017) study, there is a
connection between a student's learning style and their academic outcomes. Similarly, Esia-
Donkoh and Bentil (2017) study revealed that instructional factors can influence a student's
learning style, but disagreed that personal and environmental factors had an impact on it. The
study concludes that improving students' learning styles can improve academic performance.
Importance of the Topic
Understanding the different learning styles of students is crucial because it can contribute
to the existing knowledge about how their unique learning styles affect their academic
performance. Teevan et al, (2011) also emphasized that teachers can use this knowledge to
employ appropriate teaching strategies and methods to help students improve their academic
performance. Dalmolin, et al, (2018) suggested that determining the learning styles of students

can lead to a better educational experience, which ultimately impacts their academic
performance. Steps Taken to Address the Topic Due to the recognition of the impact of learning styles on junior high school students'
academic success, significant efforts have been made to promote academic achievement. The
National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (2019) has formulated policies and developed
a curriculum to foster inclusive education that caters to diverse learning styles. The curriculum
comprises various teaching approaches, such as cooperative learning, project-based learning, and
differentiated instruction, to accommodate different learning styles of students, aiming to
enhance their academic achievement. The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment
(2019) has also implemented targeted interventions to provide supplementary support to
struggling students. These interventions are specifically designed to cater to individual learning
styles and address learning difficulties effectively, helping students overcome challenges and
achieve academic success. Biblical Worldview
According to the Bible, education, and learning are considered valuable for personal
growth and development. The scripture teaches that every individual is uniquely created by God
(Psalm 139:13-14), which means that people possess different learning styles and abilities.
Recognizing and respecting these differences helps educators and students appreciate the diverse
ways in which knowledge and understanding can be acquired. Moreover, each person has a
unique purpose and calling in God's grand design (Jeremiah 29:11). This worldview
acknowledges that students' learning styles can align with their calling or vocation, and therefore,

teachers and students can seek guidance from God to identify and develop strengths that align
with their purpose, contributing to their academic success. References
