The purpose of this essay is to inform and hopefully guide those in the importance of lifelong learning on a daily basis. I will discuss the value it has within the Army and being an Army leader. In addition, I will discuss the contribution it has on your everyday civilian career. Lifelong learning isn’t just important in the army, every profession should be willing to become lifelong learners. I will also compare certain times in life where lifelong learning might play more of a role versus others. First, let’s discuss the importance of lifelong learning within the Army. Before we start what does it mean to be a lifelong learner. Lifelong learning is the form of self- initiated education that is focused on personal development, (Valamis, 2020). Being in the military is such a demanding career. I know some people choose to do the military for different reasons, but at the end of the day we all have to endure the same situations at some point. For example, our Sergeant might as us to go perform a task. Whether we know how to perform that task or not, we are expecting to get it done. Therefore, with lifelong learning we gather the resources needed to complete the task. The next time we are asked to perform that task again we have the prior learned knowledge to accomplish it without asking for help. We might even be able to teach others how to perform that task. Secondly, I will discuss the value of being a lifelong learner as a leader within the Army. Being a leader and in charge of other Soldiers you are expecting to hold endless amounts of information. Obviously not everyone knows everything, but in order to be a leader you have to be within to learn something every day. A Soldier might come to you for advice about something or even ask a question about something. 3 Informa ti ve Essay: Lifelong Learning the answer it would benefit you to go learn it and bring that information back to your Soldier. Without an individual's commitment to grow intellectually, the organization will fall short of its potential, (Robert D. Schwartzman, May-June 2003). Not being willing to further your knowledge with ultimately lead yourself to an inability to guide others to success. Next, lifelong learning doesn’t only contribute to the Army, it is crucial to success in the civilian job. Lifelong learning can also fortify and round out the skills you need to excel in the working world, (Jessica Keys, 2016). At your job, your employer might ask you to complete a training to progress in your workplace. Achieving this training not only increased your knowledge, it also improved your ability to perform at work, by knowing more to increase your functionality. If you are unemployed for example, learning a new skill or improving your own craft can benefit exponentially. The reason being, it can improve your resume. By adding to your resume may benefit you to find a job. Which in the long run is the ultimate goal after being unemployed. Finally, everyday life can play into the necessity of lifelong learning. Whether it be for a test at school or learning a new sport. The need to learn is always around us. Picking up a new skill, even something like learning how to cook can be credited to lifelong learning. Without the desire to constantly learn and gain new knowledge will lead you become dependent on other’s knowledge. One benefit to lifelong learning is that it can help you understand how the world works; whatever it is that you’re interested in, it is one way to live a better life, (CFI Education Inc., 2015-2020). In conclusion, lifelong learning is such an importance in every stage of life. In the Army you are expected to always learn no matter what position you are.
