Jeffrey Dahmer Project Three Shawna Soard Southern New Hampshire University CJ 340: Criminology Professor Wendy Albert March 3, 2024
Between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer was a serial killer and convicted sex offender. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1960. Throughout the period of 13 years, he would go on to murder 17 men. These crimes were committed throughout Wisconsin and portions of Ohio (O'Meara, 2009). Cannibalism, dismemberment, rape, and necrophilia were among Dahmer's atrocities (McEvoy, 2023). He found his victims in gay bars and other places like shopping centers, bus stops, and malls. He would entice them with promises of money, sex, or watching a movie to get them to come to his house, where he would drug and then strangle them to death. He would then perform sexual actions on the corpses before dismembering and discarding them, frequently saving their genitalia or skulls as mementos. He regularly took pictures of his victims at different points during the killing process so he could remember every act later and feel it again (McEvoy, 2023). Jeffrey's early childhood provides insight into the connection between criminal behavior and culture. The divorce of his parents when he was a small child affected him emotionally. In addition, he battled drug addiction, alcoholism, and depression (Saborsky & Ramsland, 2013). Considering that many of Dahmer's victims were young men of race. It was partly because of racism and homophobia that Dahmer was able to commit and finish these crimes. The rivalry between the Milwaukee police and the local community made it easy for these people to vanish without raising any red flags from the authorities. At the time, the public's ignorance of gay men was a primary source of homophobia. McEvoy reports that in May 1991, the police chose to believe Dahmer, a White man residing in a low-income neighborhood with a large Black population, after receiving a report of an Asian boy running around the street nude. This decision was made to avoid getting "become embroiled in a homosexual domestic disturbance" (McEvoy, 2021). The city's long history of institutionalized racism and homophobia made many people
particularly susceptible to Dahmer's tactics because of the police department's perspective on the matter (Kwan, 1997). Regarding Dahmer, I think his reasons for carrying out these crimes were more important than his environment, but his environment did enable him to do so. The hostility that existed between the black, LGBTQ, and police communities made it much easier for Dahmer to commit his crimes. The advantage of using theory to explain criminal behavior is that it's a useful tool for understanding and explaining the world we live in. Criminal justice professionals can always use more knowledge about what to look for in a crime and how to apply theories to stop crimes. Fairness is the fundamental tenet of the criminal justice system. Generalizations that oversimplify or exaggerate the actions of a group are known as stereotypes. Stereotyping and drawing broad generalizations have the disadvantage of being unjust. When we generalize about people of any race, culture, person, subculture, or group, we are not treating them with due respect. To try to understand the motivations, patterns, and methods of punishment used by serial killers, criminology theories can be utilized. We can apply certain theories to Dahmer to determine why he might have committed these crimes. We can improve our understanding of serial killer conduct to try and understand patterns of behavior and prevent more frequent tragedies like this from occurring. However, if we analyze him only via a particular theory, it may limit our comprehension of him and his intentions. To guarantee that people working in the criminal justice system are held responsible for their conduct, ethics are crucial. Ethics was a major factor in this situation. As was already mentioned, there was hostility between the community and the police when the horrific crimes were committed. After seeing 14-year-old Sinthasomphone naked, a woman who resided in a nearby building reported Dahmer to the authorities. Once police officers Gabrish and Balerzak
