INT-310 Topic 1 – DQ2
Professor Ryan and Classmates,
According to Moreau, in ‘Introducing World Missions,’ “
Diaspora is The contemporary scattering of peoples across the globe whether from economic migration, refugee flight, displacement, or other circumstances. This reality has opened new doors for missional action and missiological reflection” (p. 18). According to a 2019 United Nations report, the Indian diaspora is the world's largest diaspora, with a population of 17.5 million, followed by the Mexican diaspora, with a population of 11.8 million (

).
The group that I am familiar with that goes hand and hand with this report is the ethnic group of Latinos, especially the Mexicans. I have many friends who are Mexican as well as several others that are provided services within one organization that I am affiliated with ‘The Hispanic Cultural Organization” which is in NY. One of my friends has shared many of her heritage and family stories. In addition, many of the individuals that are within the United States
are here for employment, political freedom and to flee from the cartels and corrupt government officials. Some want to achieve the American dream. Many have been here all along, and this land is still theirs, they never left despite the different hands of government exchanging claims over them. As the jaded history of the Southwestern United States is more nuanced and can easily fill libraries with the different accounts and historical knowledge that is California, Arizona, New Mexico, et al Missions among diaspora groups emerged only recently in response to the massive influx of the new kind of unassimilated immigrants. Home missions remain largely unfocused and splintered, and only recently some of the major denominations began to reach the diaspora peoples in their home missions.
