ARTS 130 Sophie Hanna Student #20951083 6.1- Collecting Images for Creative Representation (video script) Questions to consider : Do the images together tell a story? How do these images represent your identity of your experiences? Are the images inspirational or aspirational? Why are you drawn to them? Introduction : My collage is a representation of social injustices discussed in my autoethnography. I attempted to capture images that were meaningful and powerful to illustrate the social injustices described in my writing, yet also faced by many individuals around the world. The two main social justice issues described in these images are that of gender inequalities/discrimination and that of white privilege. Discussion of the images: Altogether I gathered 5 images to visually represent the key areas of my writing. Start I will begin to discuss the ones regarding gender inequalities. Images 1, 3, and 5 represent gender inequalities found in society today. Image 1 is illustrating how we are often close to having men and women equal, yet we still are not quite there, and this can be seen though work positions often granted to men over women, not receiving equal compensation for the work that women do (equal work for equal pay) and so forth. Although many may think that we have made it, there are still areas that need to be met to fully meet gender equality where it is fair between men and women and women are not held to a different standard then women and vis versa. Next looking at image 3 which illustrates a women’s lower half of her face where she is seen to have a piece of tape over her mouth that says silence. This image stood out to me as I have been told that my opinion does not matter and as a woman who is quote on quote weaker, I should be silenced. Just seeing this visual representation makes me upset that woman are thought to be silent instead of using their voices to help them get to their dreams and goals in life. The last image representing gender inequality is image 5. This image is my favourite and really captured my feeling and thoughts based on how many people have viewed my life for the future. This is what many people have told me that they will see me doing as it is more of a womanly job. The image is a split image showcasing that woman often go to work and then come home to work in their home stake care of their children etc. But the other aspect of this is that many would see this image and say that oh she is doing a quote-on-quote women’s job. We have given jobs a gender title on what is appropriate and meant for a woman and to do and what is appropriate and what is meant for a man to do. A man could be a nurse as a woman could be a construction worker. As well why do we see women as being the ones to always be the keeper of the home men are just as capable of completing jobs that society has deemed women. The second social justice issue represented in my visual collage is that of white privilege. Just but looking at my collage you can see there are only white people represented in this collage, this was not done on purpose as I chose pictures, I just picked the ones that I thought represented my writing well but looking at it know there is nobody of a different colour skin. How sad is it to see that we are all affected by the colour of our skin when it is something that we have no control over? The images in my collage representing this social justice issue are image 2 and 4. These images are to illustrate that
ARTS 130 Sophie Hanna Student #20951083 not all white people want to be grouped in with the others that use their skin colour to their advantage. Although we may not mean to in a way these images are trying to apologize to those who have been wronged by those of white decent. Each image has a poster and they read different messages. Image 2 reads, “Use your white privilege to dismantle the system.” And image 4 reads, “We acknowledge our white privilege.” Ultimately these images are trying to show that we are sorry our society is built like this, and we are fighting to see a change to ultimately prevent and move our world in the right direction where we are not discriminated against based on our gender colour of skin etc. Conclusion: To think that what makes us human (i.e., Gender, ethnicity etc.) are what also brings us the many social injustices that we face daily is a sickening reality that individuals of all walks of life experience daily.
