ARTS 205-D02
Journal Entry 7
This week's tours touched on Land Art, Post-Minimalism, and New Images through Postmodernism. Celebrating the Work of Heizer, Smithson, and De Maria, Duane Hanson at Van
de Weghe, NYC, Voyages Maui – Joyce Kozloff, and Great Architects – Robert Venturi.
The first tour was on the Land Art, which is made into a large area of land. You get to see
the different types of land art created and how this would not be accomplished if it were to be done in a city. Using the wide-open space was like a blank canvas that stretched for miles. This art was unable to be in galleries since they were immobile.
The second was about Duane Hanson, which gave us an insight into how we look at others. The people's detail and presentation were fascinating because it showed what the average person does, either on vacation or just shopping. The art was very lifelike and made you think.
The next tour was on Joyce Kozloff and her artwork. She used the shape of Maui islands as an inspiration for her work. Also, she was intrigued by the history of the islands. (Kozloff 2012). Her art was hand-colored and never doubled up on color so that each one was unique. She made only eight prints.
The last tour was on Great Architects with Robert Venturi. "Form follows function to form accommodates function." (Venturi, 2010). That phrase fits well with how buildings are made for the purpose and pleasing to be around. That gives room for change to grow since style and function changes through the years. They made a great reference to Las Vegas and how it has changed so much due to Urbanism.
I feel like the first tour circles back around to the last tour for land art. For instance, Las Vegas was built in the desert, a wide-open space where the buildings themselves are artwork
pieces, but the whole city is one big art piece. I can see more of how architecture is an art form with these concepts.
