Summary (Hip Hop Based Education)
A recent study found that Hip Hop Based Education may be the new way to teach middle
school. This new idea of Hip Hop Based Education has become increasingly popular with middle
school teachers. More specifically middle school Social Studies and English Language Arts. So should we start rapping to our middle schoolers? This article written by Tracey Kumer talks about the recent integration of Hip Hop Based
Learning in P-12 grades. Teachers will integrate rap and other forms of music or hip-hop into their daily teaching as opposed to text-based learning. The study shows how it was predominantly effective in middle school and high school ages. Many teachers and students said that this hip-hop-based education helped the students understand what they were learning a lot better because they were interested in the style of learning. Many middle school-age students enjoy rap and hip hop. By teaching in a context that the students enjoy it helps engage them and teach them at the same time.
Hip-hop-based learning proved most effective in Social Studies and English Language Arts. This article shows that rap primarily relates to current events and political events which helps in a social studies classroom. As well as in English Language Arts rap consists of poetry and can be used to compare literature and poetry with for example Shakespeare. Imagine rapping
Shakespeare in your class it would definitely be enjoyable to the students and help them to understand Shakespeare because he isn’t the easiest topic in ELA. In Social Studies many students get bored listening to history out of a textbook. While as rap normally talks about history and social issues you can incorporate these songs into your lesson which is current in the

time period you teaching. Hip Hop Based Learning has proved quite effective in getting students engaged with what they are learning. As well as helping them comprehend what is being taught.
Evaluate (Hip Hop Based Learning)
I personally wanting to be a Middle School Social Studies teacher find this article quite amazing. It is so hard trying to get kids engaged with the past sometimes because it isn’t always interesting to students. Finding a way to get students more engaged in History is always been something I want to do in my future classroom. This hip-hop-based learning is an amazing start to a non-typical way of teaching. Kids don’t always learn by reading out of a textbook getting them engaged with current events and history using rap will help them get involved in Social issues present and past. This article has shown some amazing results with state testing and overall grades in Social Studies and ELA. Everyone loves music I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like some sort of music. Yes, not everyone loves rap. I do not like it personally because of the language used. It would be so entertaining to see kids and teachers come up with school-appropriate raps about Shakespeare or Christopher Columbus. From previous knowledge, music has been shown to be effective in helping students memorize and learn what information is being presented to them. For example, I personally know the 100 digits of pi just because I came across a catchy song talking about the 100 digits of pi. Now if I was just trying to learn those 100 digits by staring and
going over them it would have taken a lot longer for me to learn and I would have forgotten the digits pretty fast. When you add a catchy rhyme and tune I still remember it to this day and I learned it about 7 years ago. Now imagine we had a rap for Christopher Columbus coming to the
new world every kid would remember that he came in 1492. In fourth grade, I was taught that “ In 1492 Colombus sailed the ocean blue” which has stuck with me because it was a catchy
