The cultural work I have selected is the film Rosewood. This movie was released in 1997 and is a historical drama directed by John Singleton. This movie was inspired by the Rosewood massacre that happened in 1923 in Florida when a racist lynch mob attacked an African-
American community.

Although there were some improvements compared to previous years, there were still noticeable gaps between the treatments of blacks versus whites. These gaps included reports of
discrimination regarding shopping, income standards, housing, and even jobs. The perception of whites according to studies of 1680, white people felt that blacks were treated fairly in local communities despite studies showing otherwise.

Rosewood captured the hearts of many Americans, specifically the black community. This work served as a history lesson and gave younger African Americans a raw view of what some of their ancestors went through. It opened up dialog and conversation to a challenging yet much-needed topic. Its value was priceless to the black culture that a movie dedicated to our struggles was no longer being oppressed and was given the green light to be shown in movie theaters across America.
