Community Engagement Project Your Name: Dylan Cicarelli Your Primary Course Instructor: Dr. Tony Daniels Date: 11-10-2023 Arts Organization Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre (Ballet Company) Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre celebrates the uniqueness of the African American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance heritage. Even though the majority of their works is ballet due to Mr. Alvin Ailey creating 79 ballets over his lifetime, the company has had over 235 works with over 90 choreographers embedding various dance styles embracing the African American cultural experience. Social Issue The social issue is racial discrimination, specifically focusing on Black Lives Matter. Alvin Ailey’s Company is mainly composed of BIPOC (black, indigenous, and other people of color) dancers. I believe this is an ideal art organization to represent the Black Lives Matters Movement since it is one of the first racially-integrated dance companies. Non-arts Organization Black Lives Matters Foundation, Inc. is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to help curb violence inflicted on the Black communities. Black Lives Matters Foundation, Inc. focuses on combating and countering acts of violence by creating space for Black imagination and innovation. Engagement Collaboration Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and the Black Lives Matters Foundation, Inc. will collaborate by putting on a dance production with the dances centered around the theme of racial discrimination and the Black Lives Matters Movement. Within the dances, there will be backdrops and props highlighting the Black Lives Matter Movement as well as the dance

choreography showing the injustices faced by the black community. All ticket sales for the dance production will be used as donations to promote the Black Lives Matters Movement, which the Alvin Ailey Company and the Black Lives Matters Foundation will be promoting. Engagement Experience The art will be presented with a dance production put on by the Alvin Ailey Dance Company with the Black Lives Matters Foundation helping with the promotion of the event. The event will last for a week with several shows being done throughout the week. There will be one show performed on Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Fri, and two shows performed Sat and Sun. All ticket sales will go to help advocate for the Black Lives Matters Movement. Desired Outcomes I hope to achieve community awareness of the Black Lives Matter Movement. I feel that we honor these movements when major events happen, but then forget about them when the news media does not highlight the event anymore. Racial discrimination and violence toward the Black community is ongoing. Just because the news media might not share it everyday does not mean it is not happening. Black people are losing their lives in wrongful manners and awareness needs to continue to be made, not just when a death happens to occur. I also hope that organizations come together to promote different social movements as well. We are not all alone in this world. We can help promote change among the community by working together.
