INTRO to MUSIC LESSON 10-1/HW due 10-4
Handel, “Ev’ry Valley Shall Be Exalted” from Messiah
(1741):
The song “Ev’ry Valley Shall Be Exalted” by George Handel is an Oratio, which is a type
of song sung by a chorus of musicians and has references to the Bible and is from the Baroque era. The song makes use of word painting to correlate the melody to the words being sung. As the singer sings the words “rising up,” the melody corresponds with rising notes being played. As
the singer sings the words “every mountain” and “hills made low,” rising and falling phrases are heard in the melody. The use of word painting and ritornello form is characteristic of the song’s Baroque style. While listening to the song, I could feel the song’s upbeat and dramatic mood as the melody was rising and falling with the singer’s voice which clearly emphasized the song’s use of word paining. Arlen, “Over the Rainbow” (1938):
The song “Over the Rainbow” by Harold Arlen makes use of word painting and melody to create the mood and theme of the song. The song consists of two melodies, A and B. The first melody consists of slow upward leaps with a quicker pattern of tones when Dorothy sings “Over the rainbow.” This melody is used to show Dorothy’s dream of moving to a better place and demonstrates her feeling of longing to leave her home. The second melody is more speechlike
and consists of quick rhythms and two-note patterns as Dorothy dreams of her life in a new place. It is combined with the first melody to create a feeling of balance throughout the song. When listening to the song, I could hear the two melodies contrasting and see the word painting demonstrated as the melody and rhythm changed to match the mood and tone of Dorothy’s singing. The song gave off a melancholic yet hopeful mood while listening to it and showed how
Dorothy is unhappy with her current life although hopeful about leaving her homeland and going
to a new place where she can have a better life.
