To be poor means to lack sufficient materials to live a comfortable life within society. A crucial issue is whether the state should be responsible for the welfare of the impoverished. The Kathmandu Post states “
Taking care of the poor and vulnerable is the state’s responsibility and not an act of charity. It is imperative for the government to maximize aid for the poor for whom no one ever lobbies.” (2023) I agree with this statement entirely, as it should be the states responsibility to ensure that the poor are cared for. I also believe that it should not solely be the responsibility of the state, but of mankind. I also believe that there should be a wealth distribution requiring the wealthy to provide for the poor. Matthew 19:21 states “Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven.” This biblical quote suggests that the wealthy have a responsibility to care for the poor. It is not only the obligation of
governments and affluent individuals to address societal issues but also that of Christians who are called to be compassionate and actively involved in improving the world around them.
The Bible states repeatedly that it is our responsibility to care for the poor. Proverbs 16:19, 19:17, and 22:9 all suggest caring for the poor. Psalm 41:1, 14:21, and 1 Timothy 6:18 also suggest this. We are responsible for giving to the poor, and ensuring they are given ample opportunity to grow. As members of a society, we have a shared responsibility to ensure that the basic needs of every individual are met, regardless of their socioeconomic status. This includes providing access to food, shelter, healthcare, education, and other basic necessities to those who are struggling financially. While it is true that the state, wealthy individuals, and Christians have a greater capacity to contribute to this cause, the ultimate responsibility falls on all of mankind to
work towards creating a more just and equitable world. By recognizing the inherent worth and
