***Different types of research approaches are used in the examples provided below but you will only adopt one and work with that one methodological lens and its associated methods throughout your Methodology section.***
Detailed Qualitative Methodology Outline
*Introduction (Provide an introduction to the section but without the heading “introduction”)
In this section you should connect your literature review with the philosophical assumptions of your chosen research methodology. Therefore, this section should:
1.
Briefly identify the methodological approach that you will be adopting (e.g. phenomenological, discourse analysis, content analysis, case study, ethnography, etc) and explain how the assumptions of this approach is a natural fit for the research you would like to do. Congruent with the theoretical assumptions presented above, my research enacts a qualitative constructive research approach. The theoretical perspective most often associated with qualitative researchers is phenomenology (Bogdan & Biklen, 2004). 2.
Then provide a descriptive summary of what the methodology section will consist of:
To begin, I briefly present the philosophical assumptions/ world view upon which this research is constructed. I then outline the overarching research objectives and research questions that guide the project (Phillips and Jorgensen 2000:3). Having introduced the analytical stakes of the analysis, I then outline my methodological response through the introduction of Ruth Wodak’s Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) and Lena Hansen’s (2006) research design for historically situated security discourse analysis
…. Finally,
I outline in detail the rationale and process of text selection and provide an overview of each stage of analysis. Philosophical Assumptions/World View (As this is the guiding methodological theory, use academic sources here!)
1.
This section should explicitly identify your ontological paradigm/world view (constructivist, transformative, etc.) and associated theoretical lens (phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, etc.) through which your research approach is framed. A qualitative constructive research approach is proposed for this study. This approach to research is based on the foundational assumption that there is not a single truth but rather all truth is relative and iteratively constructed by the individuals and society. As my research seeks to understand how individuals create
meaning through their experiences, I will be adopting a phenomenology (Bogdan & Biklen, 2004)…. 2.
Then briefly expand on the assumptions of this theoretical perspective (e.g. phenomenology) and explain why this is a good choice for your research given your world view assumptions, and the type of research plan you will propose. Following the phenomenological approach, researchers seek to understand meaning in events and in human interactions. Further, the context is important to the interpretation of data. This approach requires that the researcher "centers on the attempt to achieve a sense of the meaning that others give to their own situations" (Smith, 2005, p. 12). As my research is looking to understand the lived experiences of individuals who have…, this approach is most compatible with my research objectives. Research Design Role of the Researcher As the researcher is the primary research instrument for gathering and interpreting data, it
is important for researchers to be self-reflective. This means examining yourself and the ‘conceptual baggage’ you bring to the research (i.e. assumptions, preconceptions, perceptual frames, etc.) and how this could impact your research decision, wording of questions, and interpretation of data. For the sake of this proposal, synthesize your individuals biases rather than each person providing their own evaluation.
The role of the researcher in this study necessitates the identification of personal values, assumptions and biases at the outset of the study. The researcher served as a special operations commander in the U.S. Air Force, training combat helicopter aircrews and participated in military humanitarian relief operations […] He believes that these experiences enhance his awareness, knowledge, and sensitivity to the issues being addressed in this study and will assist him in working with the key participants. Although every effort will be made to ensure objectivity, the researcher’s personal bias may shape the way he views and understands the data that is collected and their interpretation. He recognizes the need to be open to the thoughts and opinions of others and to set aside his experiences in order to understand those of the participants in the study.
Population and Sampling Plan
1.
Introduce your population of interest: Central College began in the middle of the nineteenth century as a liberal arts college, offering a course of study and degree requirements similar to those of
other liberal arts colleges. […] Central College has kept its tradition as a liberal arts college while preparing students of all ages for a lifetime of careers. The full-
time "day" undergraduate program has traditionally served the 18-22 year-old population. In recent years a very small number of students 25 years of age and older have enrolled as full-time students […] The goal of this project will be to study these full-time undergraduates 25 years of age or older with respect to their social world and the factors which affect the nature of their interactions.
2.
What is your sampling procedure and desired sample size? A convenience sample of no more than 12 students will be obtained by placing an ad in the school newspaper describing the research and requesting people to participate. An inducement of $50 off of the next bookstore purchase will be offered as compensation […. ] Research Method
The content of this section is dependent on your research project but a basic outline is provided below. If there is a research article from your literature review that you can use as a template for your research plan, this would be very helpful as long as it is consistent with your project and its foundational assumptions. Also SEE Qualitative Research Resources that I have distributed. 1.
This section connects your research world view to appropriate methods for gathering data. Explain why you chose, for example, interviewing your participants and the type of questions that are appropriate; or discourse analysis and the forms of text that you will be selecting for examination and why. If you are performing and an open-
ended structured or unstructured interview, provide an example of your opening questions and reference an Appendix that has a more complete sample draft of your proposed questions. As a qualitative study of the social world of full-time adult undergraduates is proposed, using semi-structured interviews as the primary research approach. It
is proposed to begin the interviewing process in the fall of 2010. They will begin with unstructured questions such as the following: "What has it been like to be a full-time student at Central College?" (See Appendix A for questions list). Often, with only an occasional question from me for clarification, it is anticipated that the adults will talk about a wide variety of topics throughout an extended interview. 2.
Provide a sense of time for your research. How long will it take to complete? Explain.
It is anticipated that up to 12 interviews and any necessary follow-up interviews will be conducted during that academic year. In addition, follow-up clarifying interviews will be conducted with at least a dozen of these students during the
