Perfect Storm Movie Questions
Disasters: Geology vs. Hollywood
Introduction
In October 1991, a confluence of weather conditions combined to form a killer storm in the North
Atlantic. Caught in the storm was the sword-fishing boat Andrea Gail. Magnificent foreshadowing and
anticipation fill this true-life drama while minute details of the fishing boats, their gear and the weather
are juxtaposed with the sea adventure

Learning Objectives
●
Critically assess the portrayal of hurricanes/superstorms in the movie The Perfect Storm (2000).
(4, 5, a)
●
Compare the events depicted in the movie against those found in real life.
(4, a)
Part 1:
Watch the movie clips
As you are watching the video clips, look for the answers to the following questions
.
1.
The storm shown in the 2000 film is based on a real event that happened in late October 1991.
The meteorologist describes the recipe for the “perfect storm” as being a confluence of 3 storm
systems. What were they?
The three storm systems were a hurricane from the Atlantic, a cold front from the north,
and a lull to the northeast of the storm
2.
Do you think the size of the wave that capsizes the ship
Andrea Gail
in the film is realistic?
(Although not mentioned in the clips, the length of the ship is approximately 70 feet.) Why or
why not?
The largest recorded wave in history was 1,720 feet, so while uncommon and unlikely, it is
entirely possible. This wave was caused by a landslide and would be hard to replicate in
open ocean, but it is physically possible. Normally, the largest waves are around 100 ft at the
biggest, which could also possibly capsize a 70 foot boat.
Part 2
: Towering Waves
Return to the assignment page on Canvas and listen to the NPR Towering Waves audio file. Then answer
the next set of questions
.
3.
What were the largest waves recorded by the seafloor pressure sensors during Hurricane Ivan in
2004?
The waves averaged over 50 feet, with the largest being over 90.
4.
Briefly explain how the seafloor pressure sensors allow for the measurement of wave height.
The sensors measure the water pressure on the ocean floor, the higher the pressure the
larger the wave.

5.
The seafloor pressure sensors did not record data during the most intense part of Hurricane Ivan.
According to the NPR interview, what was the estimated likely maximum wave height during the
peak of the storm?
They predicted waves up to 130 feet.
6.
Does this information change your answer to Question 2 about the realism of the wave heights in
“The Perfect Storm”? Why or why not?
No, it solidifies the belief that a wave of over 100 feet could possibly happen naturally in the
ocean, which would be more than enough to capsize a 70 foot boat.
Part 3
: Hurricane Sandy
Return to the assignment page on Canvas, read the article, and watch the short video on Hurricane Sandy
(October 2012). Then answer the next set of questions
.
7.
How was the recipe for “
Superstorm
” Sandy similar to the one that created the “Perfect Storm”
?
It had a cold front from the north colliding with a hurricane from the south, resulting in a
large and powerful hurricane.
8.
List two reasons why winds and flooding from Sandy were worse than during the 1991 event
depicted in The Perfect Storm.
The hurricane had stronger winds and a tropical storm that followed the initial hurricane.
Also on a personal level, Hurricane Sandy knocked down my favorite tree in
my yard which
was not cool.
