Virtual Earthquake Lab: Answer Sheet
Introduction:
The virtual earthquake simulation will show you the recordings of an earthquake’s seismic
waves detected by instruments far away from the earthquake. The instrument recording the seismic
waves is called a
seismograph
and the recorded wave is a
seismogram.
The point of origin of an
earthquake is called its
focus
and the point on earth’s surface directly above the focus is the
epicenter
.
Objectives
:
To locate the epicenter of an earthquake by making simple measurements on three
seismograms and
to determine the Richter Magnitude of the quake from the recordings that will be
presented to you by the
Virtual Earthquake
program.
Define the following term from the introduction above:
seismograph-
seismogram-
focus-
epicenter-
Follow the
Virtual Earthquake Directions Handout
to answer the following questions.
Use the seismogram on page 1 of the virtual earthquake program to answer these questions:
a.
What is the unit of measure on the vertical axis? _______________________________
b.
What is the unit of measure on the horizontal axis?_____________________________
c.
_________________________________________ is the time of the S-P interval?
d.
_________________________________ is the amplitude or Maximum S wave?

Follow directions handout to send your certificate your teacher.
Choose “Execute Earthquake.” At the bottom of page 1 choose “2. Southern California.”
Complete this simulation on the computer, sending your completed certificate to your teacher.
Repeat for 3. Japan region and 4. Mexico.
*You do not have to write the data for 2,3,4 on paper.
