Describe the major difference between the alternation of generations in the life cycles of nonvascular plants (example: mosses) and seedless vascular plants (example: ferns). (1 pt) 2. The fossil record provides little information about ancient mosses. Do you think nonvascular plants could have ever been as large as trees or shrubs? Provide evidence based on your knowledge of nonvascular plant anatomy. (1 pt) 3. Fern antheridia release sperm that then swim toward archegonia in a watery film. The archegonia release a fluid containing chemicals that attract the sperm. This is an example of chemotaxis, which is the movement of cells or organisms in response to a chemical. (1 pt) a. Assuming sperm availability is limited, what effect would sperm chemotaxis have on fertilization rates? b. Sperm chemotaxis occurs in a variety of animals, including humans. Do you think sperm chemotaxis is more critical for organisms that perform external fertilization (example: mosses) or organisms that perform internal fertilization (example: humans)? Explain your rationale. 4. Do any species of ferns or nonvascular plants (ex: mosses) belong to the flora of Kansas? (2 pts) a. If the answer is yes, name one genus that is found in Kansas.* b. In your own words, summarize the difference between the terms native and non-native in reference to plants.* Is the plant genus from question 4a native or non-native to Kansas?* c. In what type of habitat does this plant thrive?*
