ISB 201 – Ecosystem Services & Economic Value of Insects [15 pts] Assignment Objectives/Directions: The goals for this assignment are to learn a little about ecosystem services associated with insects, and also to begin developing responses to the question: Should We Put a Price-tag on Ecosystem Services. This worksheet coincides with the reading: The Economic Value of Insects.
For this assignment you may hand-write your answers on lined paper, or print off the worksheet and hand-write your answers. All work must be hand-written. The assignment is due at the beginning of next class.
1.
Before reading the article
, take a position on whether a price-tag should be put on ecosystem services (Y or N) and provide two reasons why (no need to do research before answering this question).
(2pts)
2.
Make a list of as many ‘Ecosystem Services’ associated with insects that were discussed in the reading (aim for at least 5 different examples
). Note: it’s possible that one species of insect can contribute to multiple different services, and we are just creating a list and not fully explaining the services in this question. (3pts)
3.
From you list above, chose three ecosystem services associated with insects and describe more specifically what they are and why humans and/or environments benefit from the service) (3pts)
4.
Now, take the position that YES we should put a price-tag on ecosystem services and then provide two detailed reasons for this position. For each reason, include comments on the ‘economic value’ of insects (ie, dollars, data, statistics, etc. mentioned in the reading) (4pts)
5.
Provide two detailed reasons why we should NOT put a price-tag on ecosystem services. These examples may not be as apparent from the reading, but reasons are alluded to. Be specific with your reasoning here. For example, just saying NO because it would be difficult is not a compelling argument. You might even need to do a little digging online to provide detailed reasoning. (3pts)

Mountain Top Primary School is situated in a beautiful environment in the mountains. The school consists of eight classes, one for each grade. Although the buildings are fairly old, the school is well equipped, and the teachers have all the resources they need. Much of the teaching and learning is done outdoors with a focus on the local natural resources. The learners are encouraged to be active in their community and help each other. Social and spiritual values are emphasised.
The principal is supportive of everything that the teachers plan. Planning means that each teacher decides on relevant content and adapts the CAPS document according to what learners are interested in. Planning is seen as a dynamic process and…

literature. If the literature meets the criteria specified, mark Yes in the box
given. Otherwise, type No.
Research title: Development of Danio rerio (Zebra fishes) embryos in varying
set-ups of heavy metals
Year of conduct: 2020
Statement of the problem: Many chemical elements have been observed to
impair proper growth of many marine aquatic fauna. Over the years,
coastlines have been polluted by industrial wastes which includes heavy
metals (ex. mercury) that were observed to cause abnormal development in
susceptible organisms such as mussels and inshore fishes. Up to date, a
careful examination of how development is impaired by these heavy metals
remain uninvestigated. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the effects of the
three commonly used heavy metals in the industry (Mercury, Lead, and
Arsenic) on the embryonic development…

List the energy yield in ATP molecules for each of the following
reactions. If the reaction needs ATP give the answer as a negative
number.
✓ Correct
This reaction has two steps. In the first step, ATP is generated as glucose is broken down into two molecules of pyruvate. Under anaerobic conditions
pyruvate is converted to lactate. In this second step, ATP, in the form of NADH+H+, is used to power the conversion of pyruvate to lactate. Energy-
producing steps can be summarized as follows
glucose → 2 pyruvate + 2 ATP + 2 NADH (5 ATP)
ATP produced = 2 ATP +2 NADH(1 NADH…
