Scientific method assignment 25 points The completed assignment will be turned in via Blackboard. Part I: Identifying dependent and independent variables in scientific studies Most people learn about the results of scientific studies from the lay media (e.g. news sources other than scientific journals – CNN, Time, etc.) and often make health care decisions based upon what they read in these sources. It is therefore important to be able to critically evaluate the scientific studies referred to in the lay media in order to make informed decisions about your health. When you read such studies you should ask yourself the following questions: What is the question being asked in this study? Can it be answered with measurements or observations? Is the hypothesis testable and falsifiable? What are the variables in this study (independent, dependent, controlled)? What is the control group? What is the methodology? If the question and hypothesis are sound, the methodology is reliable, and the source is a reliable source, then you can be fairly certain that the study is a sound one and the results believable. For the first part of this assignment you will gain practice in critically evaluating one recent scientific study explored the relationship between bacteria in our gut and obesity and metabolic disorders. Read the summary of the study here: http://science.time.com/2013/08/29/you-are-your-bacteria-how- the-gut-microbiome-influences-health/ Based on the study on Danish volunteers, identify the following: (2 pts) Dependent variable(s) (2 pts) Independent variable (2 pts) One controlled variable Part II: Using the scientific method in everyday life The scientific method is the approach used by scientists to conduct experiments. However, the scientific method does not apply to just the sciences, it is equally applicable to real life. Choose a real life scenario that you might encounter in which the scientific method could be used to answer a question. Be creative!! Describe the scenario in a well written one paragraph summary and then identify all the parts of the scientific method as they relate to your real-life example. Please write legibly. No grade will be given to illegible assignments. Description of scenario: (5 pts)
Parts of the scientific method: (2 pts each part) Observation Question Hypothesis Prediction Experiment Results Conclusion
