ARTICULATIONS 1. CLASSIFICATION OF JOINTS (FIG 9.4, TABLE 9.1) A. Articulations = joints i. A place where two or more bones meet. ii. Classified by either structure or movement. iii. An inverse relationship between mobility and stability. The more mobile a joint, the less stable it is) (fig 9.1) B. Two ways to classify joints: i. Structure 1. Fibrous joints (fig 9.2): a. Dense regular CT (fibrous CT) connects bones b. No joint cavity or space between bones 2. Cartilaginous joints (fig 9.3): a. Cartilage binds the bone b. No joint cavity
3. Synovial joints (fig 9.4): a. Ligaments support articulating bones b. Bone ends separated by a joint cavity ii. Movement 1. Synarthrosis : immovable joint 2. Amphiarthrosis : slightly moveable 3. Diarthrosis : freely moveable 2. FIBROUS JOINTS (FIG 9.2) A. Suture i. Dense regular CT binds bones ii. Immovable joint (synarthrosis) iii. Ex. coronal, lambdoid, sagittal sutures B. Syndesmosis i. Bones held together by interosseous ligaments (formed from dense regular CT) ii. Slight movement (amphiarthrosis) iii. Ex: Between radius & ulna, between tibia & fibula C. Gomphosis i. Root of tooth attached to jaw by periodontal membranes ii. Synarthrosis 2
3. CARTILAGINOUS JOINTS (FIG 9.3) A. Synchondrosis i. Bones connected by hyaline cartilage ii. Synarthrosis iii. Ex: epiphyseal plate, costochondral joints B. Symphysis : i. Bones connected by fibrocartilage ii. Amphiarthrosis iii. Ex: intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis 4. SYNOVIAL JOINTS (FIG 9.4) A. Diarthroses B. Structure i. Ligaments bind bone to bone ii. Articular (joint) capsule – surrounds bone ends iii. Synovial membrane 1. Lines articular capsule 2. Makes synovial fluid secreted into the joint cavity iv. Joint cavity – inside space of capsule - Synovial fluid secreted in here 3
