U1 [INTRO TO PLANTS]: 5 characteristics of plants: Multicellular eukaryotes Autotrophs containing chloroplast for photosynthesis Non-motile (fixed to one spot) Plants cells walls are made of cellulose Plants respond to environment Plant adaptations to Land: Protection from drying out for leaves and stems System of vessels to transport water, nutrients and waste in roots, stems and leaves Stems and leaves as a system to hold the plant up and capture energy from light _____________________________________________________________________________________ Non-vascular: - no system of vessels to carry nutrients, water or waste - lack leaves and true roots - move between cells by osmosis Vascular Plants: - system of vessel and tissue to transport materials - true roots to anchor them and absorb water and minerals - use spores for reproduction Seed producing plants (gymnosperms): - produce sexually without needing water - fully developed embryo, food supply and water-proof seed coat - produce naked seeds Flowering plants (angiosperms) -> dicot and monocot - seeds are protected in fruit and attract animals - pollen fertilizes each seed or ovule to develop fruit - two types of flowering plants: monocot (one leaves) and dicot (two leaves)
U2 [DI VS MONO] (TYPES OF FLOWER): Dicots: Monocots: -two cotyledons -one cotyledon -floral parts in 4 or 5 -floral parts in 3 -tap roots -fibrous roots -branched veins -parallel veins -outer ring vascular tissue -scattered vascular tissue ______________________________________________________________________________ ROOT TYPES: dicots -> tap roots (longer and spread apart) monocots -> fibrous roots (closer together) Four functions of roots: - anchor plant in soil - carry water to plant from xylem - absorb water and minerals - protect soil from erosion TAPROOT
Four functions of stems: - hold leaves up to light - transport dissolved sugar in phloem - transport water and dissolved minerals in xylem - specialized systems have other functions: stolons (runners reproduction) rhizomes (underground stem reproduction) tubers (storage) root hair - increase surface area over which water absorption can take place annual plants - green stems (seeds) perennial plants - woody stems (trees and shrubs) ______________________________________________________________________________ DICOT STEM MONOCOT STEM U4 [TRANSPORT] (STEM): Vascular bundles (ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms): -two types: xylem and phloem - xylem: roots -> stems - > leaves and flower -water into roots from [osmosis] and water evaporates through [transpiration] -xylems are formed from long tracheids and vessel elements - phloem: up & down -sugar dissolved water up and down using [translocation] -phloems are formed from sieve tube elements
