Biology 1110 Reading Assignment and Worksheet Lecture 12: Gas Exchange in Plants Learning Objectives: 1. Explain why organisms need to exchange materials between their cells and the environment and describe the role of diffusion in this process. 2. Explain the relationship between the size of an organism, its surface area and the ability of its cells to exchange materials with its environment. 3. Define gas exchange and cellular respiration and explain the relationship between these two processes in organisms. 4. Describe three adaptations for gas exchange in vascular plants: (a) root hair (b) lenticel (c) stoma . 5. Describe the structure and function of a stoma and explain how it is able to open and close. 6. Explain how the structure of a leaf facilitates gas exchange. Add all of the bolded terms in the learning objectives above to your definition list. Make flashcards to help you memorize this terminology. There will likely be more bolded terms in the lecture slides that you should also add to your list. Be sure to write definitions for all terms in your own words ! Read the following sections in your course textbook (Campbell Biology) and provide written answers to the questions for each section. Chapter 35: Plant Structure Growth and Development Concept 35.3 Primary growth lengthens roots and shoots - Read only “Tissue Organization of Leaves” (1 st ed:805, 2 nd ed:814-815, 3 rd ed:820-821) - Review the parts of a leaf in Figure 35.18 Leaf Anatomy Which type of ground tissue cells form the spongy and palisade mesophyll in a plant leaf? _______________________ What is the primary function of the palisade mesophyll tissue? How does its structure support that function? What is the role of the vascular bundles (veins) distributed throughout the leaf? Briefly describe the function of stomata and explain the role of the guard cells. 1
Why do plants on land require stomata for gas exchange? I.e. Why don’t gases diffuse directly across the surface of the leaf? How does the arrangement of the cells in the spongy mesophyll tissue support movement of gases throughout the leaf? Concept 35.4 Secondary growth increases the diameter of stems and roots in woody plants - Read only section titled “Cork Cambium and Production of the Periderm” (1 st ed:808-809, 2 nd ed:818, 3 rd ed:824) What is the function of lenticels? How are they different from stomata? Chapter 36: Resource Acquisition and Transport in Vascular Plants Concept 36.4 The rate of transpiration is regulated by stomata (1 st ed:833-836, 2 nd ed:840- 842, 3 rd ed:846-848) Why do plants close their stomata? List the environmental conditions that would trigger a plant to close its stomata. Photosynthesis does not occur in root tissues. Why is it important for roots to have mechanisms for gas exchange? 2
