Bio 111: Lecture 1 Homework What are the steps in the scientific method? The steps in the scientific method are to develop a question, develop a hypothesis, design the study, collect the data, analyze the data, and share the findings. Why do scientists use controls in both field studies and laboratory studies? Controls are used to ensure that the outcome is due to the experiment variable. The control group in an experiment is included to determine if the experiment is sensitive to the effect of the variable of interest. The test group experiences the variable, and the control group does not. What is the difference between a hypothesis and a scientific theory? A hypothesis is a guess or prediction that has not been tested nor does it have a valid conclusion. A scientific theory has been tested during an experiment and is valid through the scientific findings through an actual experiment. What are the characteristics of living things and discuss each of them. Living things are made up of basic units called cells. All living things need an outside source of materials for energy or food. All living things reproduce and develop. When reproducing they pass their genetic information to their offspring. Development is the process that the organism goes through to become an adult. Responding to stimuli is where organisms detect and react in their environments with internal and external events. Homeostasis is the ability to maintain a stable internal environment inside their bodies. Adaptation comes along with an organism existing in a particular environment. Evolution occurs over multiple generations and changes occurring. The organism will have to adapt to their new way of life. Give an example of homeostasis in humans. An example of homeostasis is the normal body temperature being 98.6 Fahrenheit. When a person is running a fever then the body naturally begins to sweat so that the heat is released to cool their body back down to the normal temperature. When a person is cold their body will begin to shiver to increase the heat production and warm the body up to the normal body temperature. What is evolution? Evolution is the accumulation of these changes over multiple generations and the resulting adaptation to the organism’s environment. What are the rules for writing a scientific name? The rule of writing a scientific name is each species has a Latin name that consists of the genus and species name. Both names are italicized but only the genus name is capitalized. Name the categories (taxa) of classification, from species to domain. Which category (taxum) contains more types of organisms having general characteristics in common? The categories of taxonomy classification are genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom, supergroup, and domain. The category that contains more types of organisms would be kingdom.
What are the Kingdoms in Domain Eukarya? Domain Eukarya contains the eukaryotic protists, fungi, plants, and animals.
