Biol 1306 _ Chapter 5
CASE STUDY
Detective Sandy Bergen is stumped. He is working a homicide case where the victim was found shot on
his sailboat moored in harbor. The medical examiner estimates time of death was sometime between 6
PM and midnight. There were no witnesses to the murder. But Detective Bergen has pieced together
some information about the victim’s schedule for the night he died.
Gina, the victim’s personal assistant, said the victim left work just before 5 PM saying he had to pick up
his dry cleaning on his way home. The owner of the cleaners thinks he saw the victim as he left with his
shirts and walk to a hotdog cart across the street. But according to the victim’s girlfriend Vanessa, they
always have dinner at her place on Tuesday nights at 5 PM. She claims the victim came over promptly at
5 and together they made a roast chicken; they stayed up late binge-watching their favorite TV show, and
the victim left her apartment around 11 PM. However, the victim wrote “9 PM – Meet Lou” in his day
planner. Lou Santiago is the victim’s former business partner; she lives above a donut shop near the
harbor. In Lou’s interview, she says the victim came by to talk about a new business venture of his and
they talked for an hour while eating a couple of donuts from downstairs.
Detective Bergen isn’t sure who to believe. He hopes that the autopsy report detailing the contents of
the victim’s stomach will help sort out the timeline. One of these meals was probably his last.
Q1: What macromolecules would you expect to find in the victim’s stomach for each meal?
Protein, Lipids, simple carbohydrate, nucleic acid

Scenarios:
Mr. Johnson is admitted to room 337 in an acute care facility. The nurse interviews the client to
determine the history of this illness, health history, and family history. The nurse then performs
the head-to-toe physical assessment. Mr. Johnson has complained of acute leg pain. The nurse
collects further data specifically regarding Mr. Johnson's leg pain.
The nurse checks Mr. Johnson's admission orders and notes medication is ordered as needed for
leg pain.

Case study#1 Assume that you work in criminal investigation unit and were called for an incident that involved someone who was shot. You arrived to the scene to see a dead person in his 50s and no other evidences rather than a small piece of clothing with blood on it. You collected the blood and went to the lab. The Investigation lead to four suspects that happened to be either close to the place of incident or had problems with the victim. You checked the blood type of that blood and it was (O). When you did blood typing for the four suspects, the results came out as the followings: jacks blood reacted only to A, Sams blood reacted to both A and B, Nathans blood reacted only to B, and Johns blood didnt react to either A or B. Answer the following questions
1. Which one of the four is the person of interest (suspect) based on the blood typing reaction
2. Which blood type is universal donor? why?
3. Which blood type is universal acceptor? Why?

1. Flip a coin twice to determine the genotype for each trait and record it in the data table.
Heads = allele 1, Tails = allele 2 (Example: if you fipped heads twice, your monster will hove two
copies of ollele 1 for his genotype.)
2. Determine the phenotype resulting from the allele pair for each trait.
3. Repeat steps 1-2 for each trait and complete the female monster's Table 1.

1. Set up your dissection in a way you feel comfortable. Use the included video for a suggested method.
2. Make sure to have a camera ready to take pictures of your brain to show you completed the dissection. You will
need at least 3 pictures of the eye, more are fine. You will need to identify all of the bolded structures below.
3. Identify the right and left sides of the heart. Look closely and on one side you will see a diagonal line of blood
vessels that divide the heart; this line is called the interventricular sulcus. The half that includes all of the apex
(pointed end) of the heart is the left side.
4. Locate the coronary arteries and veins that are on the surface of the heart.
5. Find the flaps of dark tissue on the top of the heart. These ear-like flaps are called auricles.
6. The front-most vessel is the pulmonary trunk. Place a probe or pin in the vessel to mark…
