Biol 1306 _ Chapter 5 CASE STUDY Detective Sandy Bergen is stumped. He is working a homicide case where the victim was found shot on his sailboat moored in harbor. The medical examiner estimates time of death was sometime between 6 PM and midnight. There were no witnesses to the murder. But Detective Bergen has pieced together some information about the victim’s schedule for the night he died. Gina, the victim’s personal assistant, said the victim left work just before 5 PM saying he had to pick up his dry cleaning on his way home. The owner of the cleaners thinks he saw the victim as he left with his shirts and walk to a hotdog cart across the street. But according to the victim’s girlfriend Vanessa, they always have dinner at her place on Tuesday nights at 5 PM. She claims the victim came over promptly at 5 and together they made a roast chicken; they stayed up late binge-watching their favorite TV show, and the victim left her apartment around 11 PM. However, the victim wrote “9 PM – Meet Lou” in his day planner. Lou Santiago is the victim’s former business partner; she lives above a donut shop near the harbor. In Lou’s interview, she says the victim came by to talk about a new business venture of his and they talked for an hour while eating a couple of donuts from downstairs. Detective Bergen isn’t sure who to believe. He hopes that the autopsy report detailing the contents of the victim’s stomach will help sort out the timeline. One of these meals was probably his last. Q1: What macromolecules would you expect to find in the victim’s stomach for each meal? Protein, Lipids, simple carbohydrate, nucleic acid Q2: The molecular formula for glucose is C 6 H 12 O 6 . What would be the molecular formula for a molecule made by linking three glucose molecules together by dehydration reactions? C6H12O6 takes out 3 water molecules H4 and O2 C6H12O6 C6H12O6= C6H36O18 answer is = C6 H32 O16
