W10 Worksheet: Urinalysis
Follow the instructions below very carefully. Many of the items in this assignment require
reading, or videos, or something else to do. Each question has either a text box that can be
filled out or a box that can be checked to show completion. Be sure to type out your answers
completely and expand the text boxes if you need the additional space.
Question 1 --- 2 points
Urinalysis
Some urinary system diseases can have relatively insignificant symptoms in the early stages. The
careful analysis of urine and urine production can sometimes reveal pathology that would
normally go unnoticed for a long time. Just a few examples of such diseases that urinalysis
might help identify are diabetes, various forms of urinary tract infections, and kidney disease. If
you are attending the lab, your lab instructor will give you a urinalysis reagent strip and let you
do your own analysis.
Go to the
urinalysis presentation
(links to an external site) to do a tutorial that will guide you
through some practice with urinalysis, then answer the following questions. Please remember
that links in this worksheet generally open up a new window, so you may need to close it to
return to this worksheet.
Which of the following results from a urinalysis reagent strip would most likely suggest that
there is an increase of red blood cell break down in the body?
Choose one:
☒
High levels of urobilinogen in the urine
☐
Low levels of glucose in the urine
☐
Blood in the urine
☐
High levels of ketones in the urine
Question 2 --- 2 points
Which of the following results from a urinalysis reagent strip would most likely suggest that
someone was following an extreme and long-term version of the Atkins diet?
Choose one:
☐
Increased urobilinogen in the urine
☒
Increased ketones in the urine
☐
Increased glucose in the urine
☐
Increased protein in the urine
Question 3 --- 2 points
Some patients who take a class of drugs called statins can experience a side effect called
rhabdomyolysis. Which of the following results from a urinalysis reagent strip would most
likely suggest that a person was experiencing this negative side effect?
Choose one:
☐
Increased glucose in the urine
☐
Increased ketones in the urine
☒
Increased protein in the urine
☐
Increased leukocytes in the urine
Question 4 --- 2 points
Do your own research on the internet and explain what rhabdomyolysis is. Make sure you
include some of the causes of this condition.
Your answer:
Rhabdomyolysis is a medical condition. It involves the breakdown of muscle tissue, releasing
some things from the inside of the muscle that can harm us. These released contents include
myoglobin, creatine kinase, and other proteins, which can be harmful to the kidneys and other
organs. Causes that could lead to rhabdomyolysis include physical trauma, extreme physical
activity, infections, and heat stroke.
Question 5 --- 2 points
Glomerular Filtration Rate and Renal Clearance
This section of the lab discusses the fraction of plasma that actually gets filtered by the kidneys
as it passes through the kidneys. The kidneys have the responsibility to filter our blood and
remove toxins and waste products. Kidneys also regulate fluid removal from our blood and
body. This helps us control our blood pressure. Kidneys also help regulate the concentration of
many important ions and nutrients. Finally, kidneys help us regulate our pH within a very
narrow acceptable range. For all these reasons, it is important for us to measure how well the
kidneys are functioning when we track a person’s health.
Watch “
GFR Inulin
” (8:42 mins; Transcript; links to an external site) which discusses the
concepts of filtration, reabsorption, secretion, and excretion. This video will also discuss the
concept of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the role of inulin in calculating GFR.
View the
Plasma Clearance presentation
(links to an external site) to complete a short tutorial
on creatinine clearance.
Use the knowledge you gained from the assignments above to answer the following questions.
Substance

Cx = 125 ml/min
Glucose
Cx = 0 ml/min
PAH
Cx = 625 ml/min
Urea
Cx = 70 ml/min
Cl-
Cx = 8 ml/min
Creatinine
Cx = 120 ml/min
Look at the information above, and decide which substance appears to be extensively
secreted.

Case Scenario: Tracey has to undergo an examination because of blood in her urine. She was telephoned to ask her to come for an appointment at the OPD the following day. She went to the OPD & after 10 min., a nurse calls her name & asks her to follow. She stops outside a cubicle & asks Tracey to get changed into a gown for her procedure. There should be nothing under the gown & there are some disposable slippers for her to walk over the treatment room. She does as the nurse asks and is then ushered into a clinical room where a man introduces himself as James. “Hi, I’m James. Your doctor sent us a letter about your hematuria (blood in the urine) & said you were concerned”. He does not wait for Tracey to answer & his eyes are fixed on her medical notes where he is perusing the letter. “We are going to pop a little cystoscope into your bladder & take biopsies. Now pop on the couch, & sign your consent form and we will get on with it”. Tracey does as she is…
