Field Survey Make Up Assignment
This assignment takes the place of the group submission
Field Survey
. S
tudents went out to Lake
Herrick and Oconee Forest Park to collect baseline abiotic and biotic data from the aquatic and
terrestrial areas of the watershed area. Read the background information on eLC for Oconee
Forest Park and Lake Sampling to help you respond to the questions below. Submit this
assignment to the Lab 9 makeup assignment dropbox within 5 days of your absence

Read about Lake Herrick, view the maps and any pictures you might be able to see on
the website. Describe the land use in Lake Herrick and Oconee Forest Park based on the
information you have. How has the land been altered? What human activity takes place
there? (3 pts
(
a
.
Lake Herrick is a 15-acre body of water that is located on southern UGA’s
campus. Its watershed covers 248 acres, that includes 66.4 acres that drain into
the sub-watershed on a nearby pond. The watershed includes all of UGA’s IM
fields and Oconee Forest Park, as well as part of a neighborhood. The lake was
initially constructed in 1982 for recreation, research, and teaching. You cannot
swim or boat in it, as it was banned in 2002. It still is used for teaching in
various science courses at UGA. It has been reopened recently because of a
project including restoration and revitalization. The first two phases of this
project included removing sediment and invasive plants from the upper bond,
and installing storm water control measures. Also, the shoreline on the lake has
been improved with the addition of a terraced lawn, overlook dock and boat
and kayak launch. Now, you can use non-motorized boats, as well as fish (with
license
.(

.
Students collected abiotic measurements in a disturbed area (such as a trail) vs an
undisturbed area (such as the area in the forest away from the trail). Soil pH, soil
temperature, air temperature, and light intensity were measured. Describe what
differences between the two areas you would expect. For example, would you expect
soil pH to be higher in a trail or the forest? Or perhaps the same? (3 pts
(
a
.
For soil pH, I think it would be higher in the forest rather than the trail, mainly
because the forest is undisturbed
.
b
.
For everything else, I feel like it would be relatively the same
.
3
.
Students also collected biotic measurements between the disturbed area vs the
undisturbed area, specifically abundance and biodiversity measurements. See the data
table below. What trends or differences do you notice between the undisturbed vs
disturbed area? (3 pts

The abundance and diversity is quite a bit lower in the disturbed area rather than the
undisturbed area, across all of the biotic measurements
.
4
.
Describe how energy flow and chemical cycling could be altered due to the changes in
the disturbed area. (3 pts
(
a
.
Because there is less abundance and diversity in the disturbed areas, there
would be less energy and chemicals to flow through the cycling system than in
the undisturbed areas
.

.
For the lake, students collected abiotic measurements of the water: water pH, nitrate,
phosphate, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity. Read through the background
information on Lake Sampling. Explain how these measurements are useful in
determining the overall quality of the water. (3 pts
(
a
.
Possessing these measurements is valuable for comprehending the general
water quality, as any factors diminishing water quality would impact the abiotic
measurements. Indicators such as decreased dissolved oxygen (DO), variations
in pH, elevated or diminished levels of phosphates, nitrates, and other
chemicals all serve as indications of inferior water quality

Mountain Top Primary School is situated in a beautiful environment in the mountains. The school consists of eight classes, one for each grade. Although the buildings are fairly old, the school is well equipped, and the teachers have all the resources they need. Much of the teaching and learning is done outdoors with a focus on the local natural resources. The learners are encouraged to be active in their community and help each other. Social and spiritual values are emphasised.
The principal is supportive of everything that the teachers plan. Planning means that each teacher decides on relevant content and adapts the CAPS document according to what learners are interested in. Planning is seen as a dynamic process and…
