Pre-Lab What are some possibilities for relationships between species? There are several connections among species. They may be included in both food webs and food chains. Predation, competition, mutualism, commensalism, and amentalism are the five main forms of interactions between organisms. Based on information found in your text, which of these relationships best describes the relationship between an owl and a vole? The connection between an owl and a vole is best described as a predation relationship since the owl hunts the vole in a predator against prey scenario. What is an owl pellet? How is it formed? All of the inedible byproducts of the prey that owls consume are collected in pellets. These pellets are created as the owl breaks down its meal, with the gizzard compressing all of the indigestible components. The owl will then regurgitate the inedible piece prior to eating its next meal whilst this process is taking place. What information could be obtained from the dissection of an owl pellet? What kinds of rodents and insects the owl has consumed may be discovered by dissecting an owl pellet. What area the owl has visited and what kind of diet it could be following. What type of things do you predict you will find in the pellet? I anticipate discovering many kinds of bones, hair, feathers, scales, and insect skeletons in a pellet. Post-LAB 1. 2. Perform a generic search on each of the animals in your food web and provide the habitat and food source for each one. Owls may live in a variety of settings, including the tundra of the Arctic, the desert, woods, and grasslands. While some may dig holes on the ground, others may build their nests in trees. Insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians, tiny birds, and small mammals make up an owl's diet. The habitat of a snake consists of living on land in subterranean tunnels, with certain snakes spending some time in the water. Smaller snakes, eggs, birds, small rodents, certain insects, birds, fish, and even bigger animals are among their dietary sources. A habitat for a mouse in the wild usually burrows underground that they make. Mice like to eat fruits, different types of nuts and seeds, plants, and whatever else they may be able to find. Typically, crickets like a dry, open environment with lots of grass and other vegetation. Alfalfa, flowers, and even bark are common plant/grass-type foods that crickets prefer to consume. Vegetation doesn't have a food source, but it does require sunlight and water to flourish. Vegetation in some form is also found just about everywhere on earth. 3. What parts of the prey were not digested by the owl? How do you know? The owl did not digest the fur, feathers, bones, teeth, and nails of their prey since they are the portions that remained in the owl gizzard. Lewis, D. (n.d.). Digestion in Owls - The Owl Pages .
