ASSIGNMENT 3 By Bailey Gadd (n11358220) BSB107 Financial Performance and Responsibility Due Date: 17th of June Tutor Lisa Darley Word Count: 1010 words
ASSIGNMENT 3 | By Bailey Gadd (n11358220) 2 Figure 1 A satchel Kathmandu has created to send products that is made from 100% reycled materials 1.0 Introduction Kathmandu Holdings and Premier Investments are two very big companies. Kathmandu has a value of $709 million and Premier Investments has a value $3.1 billion ( https://www.marketindex.com.au/asx/pmv ). Kathmandu Holdings own Ripcurl, Kathmandu and Oboz, making it an adventure brand and one that encourages exploring and travel. Premier Investments is responsible for owning many brands, most notably Peter Alexander, Smiggle and Just Jeans to name a few. The following report will discuss the waste and recycling policies and disclosures of both companies. The report will assess which businesses are more advanced in the waste and recycling space of their businesses and which business can be determined as more sustainable for a future business. Both businesses will have their waste and recycling policies and disclosures overviewed and analysed thoroughly and the most eco-friendly business in the future will be determined. 2.0 Discussion Both Kathmandu Holdings and Premier Investments are publicly listed companies and therefore all policies must be made available to the general public about topics such as their waste and recycling policies. 2.1 – Kathmandu Holdings The first company that will be assessed will be Kathmandu. Kathmandu has pledged that one of it’s main priorities is to achieve zero-waste. Currently Kathmandu states that “we will have diverted 90% of our waste from ending up in landfill” (Kathmandu, 2022). They go on to say that “ We’re not there... yet, but our top priority is to go further and achieve a true 100% reduction”. Another disclosure that Kathmandu has is that it will have “100% sustainable packaging by 2025”. Kathmandu’s recycling goal is to operate on only zero waste facilities. This entails operating stores with recycling bins, after they conducted an audit and discovered that recycling was something in the business that could be improved. They have placed a priority list of the waste that needs to be recycled. 1. Soft plastic (mainly polybags and shrink raps) 2. Cardboard and paper 3. Damaged stock 4. Co-mingled recycling 5. Silica gel pouches
ASSIGNMENT 3 | By Bailey Gadd (n11358220) 2 Figure 2 Premier Investments has made an objective to place a recycling bin in all its stores in effort to reduce waste Kathmandu is an adventure brand that encourages people to explore outdoors and nature. If they didn’t promote zero waste and sustainable business practices, then their brand image would be disputed heavily. 2.2 Premier Investments Premier Investments has many different businesses to oversee such as Peter Alexander, Smiggle and Just Jeans to name a few. Premier Investments has partnered with a business called Orora who deal with the waste of businesses. “Specialise in the recycling of paper and cardboard which is the major input for their recycled paper mill which produces 100% recycled paper” (Premier Investments, 2022). Premier Investments has made the initiative to invest money into a contractor to manage its waste and therefore encourage Orora’s recycling aspirations. Premier Investments has also stated that “Across our network of stores, reuse is always our first option” (Premier Investments 2022). Premier Investments has stated that it’s support centre “recycles all of the paper used and has a continued co-mingled recycling program for glass and plastics on every floor”. Premier Investments however does not have a zero-waste disclosure unlike Kathmandu. Zero waste is becoming more topical and not having policies in place may result in people perceiving Premier Investments as not caring about the environment. 3.0 Conclusion Premier Investments and Kathmandu Holdings have both created disclosures and policies that ensure that waste and recycling are dealt with and managed in the businesses that they operate and manage. Having these initiatives in place ensures that they can have sustainable and eco-friendly business practices. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of these businesses is to ensure that their practices are ethical. Kathmandu is viewed out of the two companies to have the best disclosures and policies in place to tackle waste and recycling problems in the future. As this topic is becoming more prevalent and will become even more prevalent in the future then it can be said that Kathmandu has more sustainable practices in this area then Premier Investments.
