With eight locations and over 180 employees, her office is among the largest in Texas. To improve her organization’s performance, Ms. Burgess is considering implementing a multisource feedback system and has asked for your advice. (A) List for Ms. Burgess the benefits of implementing a multisource feedback system. (B) List the disadvantages of such a system. And, finally, (C) list and briefly describe the characteristics you would recommend Ms. Burgess look for in a good multisource feedback system. Implementation of a multisource feedback system has the following benefits: a. Due to information being gathered form multiple sources, there is less opportunity for biases to be formed from the information gathered about employees’ weaknesses. b. An overall increase in awareness of expectations since employees are cognizant that performance is being evaluated. c. Higher commitment to improve performance due to information about individual performance being open to being evaluated by all. d. Employees have an accurate perception of their performance instead of distorted views since feedback is actively available. e. Overall improved performance since information is available and potentially paired with a good development plan. f. Reduced defensiveness and awkward discussions since information is gathered in an anonymous way. Employees, supervisors, and coworkers can evaluate each other with the use of multisource systems. 1
g. Individuals employed by an organization can have control of their career trajectory, with constructive criticism and detailed information about strengths and weaknesses on performance, employees can determine where their careers go. 2. While considering the advantages, please be aware of the following disadvantages of implementing a multisource feedback system: a. Risk of negative feedback hurting the feelings of an employee or the feedback not coming off in a constructive way. b. Failure of the system coming off in a way to produce positive results due to participants being evaluated having the perception of the evaluation system being overly critical of existing criticisms. c. With limited evaluators, the pool may be so small that it is easy to determine who is evaluating. d. Due to the amount of input related to the evaluations, raters may become overloaded. e. Some organizations may believe that this is a one time occurrence, however, a multisource feedback system needs to be done over time not just one instance. 3. When considering a multisource feedback system look for the following characteristics: a. Look for a system with the ability to provide anonymity, in a good system it is important to be anonymous and confidential. b. Ensure that the person participating in the observation process had firsthand knowledge and experience of the individual being evaluated. c. Feedback given to the evaluated can be interpretated by the individual being evaluated. d. Follow-up after the information is gathered is important. Time is of the essence in creating a development plan soon after feedback if received. e. Development purposes are clear in the beginning after a multisource system has been implemented. f. The system is sure to avoid having a rater perform too many rating at one time. g. Raters go beyond the scores and provide written feedback that is descriptive and detailed. h.
