The Semiconductor Inspection Device –
Fourth Generation For
Freektail Inc.
San Antonio, TX
MOT 4143 – Introduction to Project Management
Spring 2022
Introduction
You work for Freektail Inc. a medium-sized technology firm that produces semi-conductors. You have just been assigned to serve as the project manager for the Semi-Conductor Inspection Device 4
th
Generation project (SCID4). As project manager you will be responsible for all aspects
of this project. The purpose of the project is to upgrade the inspection system that is used in one of the major semi-conductor manufacturing processes at your local San Antonio facility. The new
SCID4 will be more accurate and more reliable than the inspection system that is currently used. Based on previous experience, there are two local firms that are qualified to fabricate the SCID4 to meet the requirements that will be provided in the SCID4 system specification. In order to complete this project, your team will need to define the specific requirements for the SCID4 and contract with one of the local firms to fabricate the inspection unit. You will then need to integrate
this unit into your manufacturing operation and perform testing to ensure the inspection unit is performing to specification. Finally, you will need to train operators to use and maintain the new system. A detailed statement of work for this project is provided in the following section.
Statement of Work
Concept Phase (1100)
1110 Project Management
The project team shall initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control and close the SCID4 project. The project team shall perform on-going project management activities to include the conduct of regular team meetings and status briefings. The project team shall provide weekly project performance reports that address cost, schedule and technical performance. 1120 Requirements
The project team shall meet with key stakeholders to identify the functional and physical features required of the new SCID4. These meetings shall involve assembly technicians, manufacturing supervisors, field maintenance representatives and internal instructional design
experts. The team shall document all requirements in a system specification for the inspection
device.
1130 Procurement The project team shall prepare a solicitation for the fabrication and purchase of the SCID4. The project team shall issue the solicitation to both pre-qualified vendors, evaluate prospective
bids and select a single source to provide the SCID4.
Development Phase (1200)
1210 System Integration
The project team shall arrange to have the SCID4 delivered and installed at the San Antonio Facility. The project team shall plan for the temporary cessation of manufacturing activities during the installation period.
1220 System Test
The project team shall develop a test plan to ensure the SCID4 fulfills all of the requirements of the system specification. The project team shall conduct the system test. The project team
shall review the results of all tests performed. The project team shall summarize the results of
all tests in a formal test report.
Implementation Phase (1300)
1310 System Training
The project team shall develop a training plan to ensure that all employees who will operate or
maintain the SCID4 are adequately prepared to do so. The training plan will focus on identifying who will need to be trained, what skills they will need to operate and maintain the
SCID4, and what type of instructional approaches are most appropriate. The project team will also prepare one training session including the presentation materials. The project team shall conduct the single training session.
1320 System Acceptance
The project team shall review the results of the system integration, system test and system training to ensure that the SCID4 is properly integrated and that all employees are prepared to
use it. Upon completion of this review, the project team will sign a declaration that formally accepts the SCID4 into the operation of the facility.
Project Deliverables
Deliverable 1 – Project Overview
Your task is to complete a project overview statement for the SCID5 project. This overview should state the purpose of the project. It should provide the justification for pursuit of this project from the perspective of your firm. It should state how this project aligns with the strategic direction of your firm. It should also provide initial ballpark estimates for the cost and duration of the project. For your convenience, a project overview statement template is provided in Appendix A.
Deliverable 2 – Work Breakdown Structure
Your task is to develop a Work Breakdown Structure for this project. The Work Breakdown Structure shall decompose the effort to at least level 3. For your convenience, a project work breakdown structure template is provided in Appendix A.
Deliverable 3 – Gantt Chart
Your task is to prepare and submit a project schedule in Gantt chart format for the project. The schedule must include the planned start and end dates for each work package, the planned duration of each work package, and the planned duration of the entire project. The project Gantt chart shall fit on a single page. For your convenience, a project Gantt chart template is provided in Appendix A. You may also elect to create your Gantt chart using any number of available software applications, including MS Excel.
Deliverable 4 – Detailed Work Package Summary Your task is to develop a detailed work package summary for requirements (SOW para. 1120). This work package summary must identify the specific deliverables required to complete the work package. Additionally, the work package summary must identify all resources required to
complete the work package by type and quantity. The summary must also include an estimate of the total effort (in hours) required to complete each activity. Finally, the summary must identify the direct labor cost, other direct (non-labor) cost, and the allocated overhead costs. You should adopt the format and structure of the work package template provided in Appendix A to prepare this deliverable. Deliverable 5 – Project Risk Assessment
Your task is to prepare and Deliver a Project Risk Assessment for the SCID5 project. The project risk assessment will identify and assess key risk events that may impact the success or failure of this project. For selected events, you shall identify appropriate risk responses. For your convenience, a project risk register template is provided in Appendix A.
Deliverable 6 – Project Status Report
Your task is to develop a project status report template that you will use to monitor and report project status on a monthly basis. At a minimum, your template shall provide status information
related to cost performance, schedule performance, team performance, technical performance and risk status. Your template shall also provide the opportunity to report corrective actions planned as appropriate.
Deliverable 7 – Project Organization
Your task is to prepare an organization chart that depicts how the human resources involved with the completion of this project are organized. The organization chart shall readily communicate the basis of differentiation of the parent construction firm as well as where critical
project resources reside.

Project Management - Risk Management
1. Risk management is a critical portion of project management. However, is it possible to cripple the project by being too risk wary?
2. Situation - Project managers must realize that they must manage risks and issues in a timely and effective manner. However, many project teams do not practice effective and continuous risk management throughout the project life cycle, preferring to wait until the risk becomes realized, and becomes an issue, before taking any action. Project manager must identify the project risk and review some tools and best practices that make project jobs more effective.
Does above situation has a valid point – why or why not?
Do you think above situation only applies to large scope projects, or does it also apply to smaller ones?

Some people contend that the project manager must create some sort of test to measure, early on, the ability of people to work together as a team. Is such a test possible for people working in a project environment? Are there any project organizational forms that would be conducive for such testing?
