Chalmers Controls Memo To: Roxanna Wheaton, President From: Jessica Hall, Marketing Director cc: Date: 10/10/2023 Re: German Market Analysis Dear Mrs. Wheaton, I have spent a considerable amount of time researching and finding what I believe to be a great market for us to expand into. I think that we should be focusing our expansion efforts into Germany. With Germany being the fourth largest economy in the world (International Trade Administration, 2022) I think that this market would be an excellent choice. Germany makes up one-fourth of the European GDP as of 2021 and with a population of 83.2 million people (International Trade Administration, 2022) there is a huge potential for growth. Business Culture I have researched and compiled a list of business expectations in Germany. The expectations are as follows: Once we identify possible clients we want to use the Industrie und Handleskammer (Chamber of Commerce) to make the corporate introductions. Once we have a potential client that wants more information from us we will want to plan ahead two to four weeks to set a meeting. Germans like a meeting that stays on point, formal dress code is standard. Germans value punctuality and time management Roles and titles are very highly respected and using first names is not the norm
Once they decide they want to move forward negotiations can take time and we must remain patient. (Baumgartner, 2022) Business Writing Expectations Germans like writing communication to be concise and to the point which to us can sometimes come across as rude but they prefer to get to the point and not beat around the bush (Chillistore & Pfeiffer, 2022). I have found they have specific standards for a business letter and those are as follows: Margins should be top 4.5cm, left 2.5cm, right 2cm, bottom 2.5cm Font can be anything but Arial or times New Roman and size should be 12pt but if there is a lot of information to cover you can go to 11pt You should have a header that has our name and address aligned top left. Three line down you should then have the recipients name, address and the date of the correspondence The subject line can be one to two lines but no more than two. You can use bold lettering and you can make this text slightly larger, 13 or 14pt font There should be one blank space followed by the body of the letter The ending should be something to the effect of mit freundlichen gruben (with best regards) followed by three blank lines and then the signature. (Deutsch mit Leo, 2023) I believe that since Germany is such a large market that will continue to grow this is the best place for us to concentrate our efforts on. Knowing the best way to communicate with our potential clients will make us successful in this market. Sincerely, Jessica Hall Marketing Director 2
