School Budgetary Needs Assessment Survey Rosa I. Diaz-Martinez Grand Canyon University EAD-510-O500: Education Finance Dr. Rice February 22, 2023
2 Although faculty and staff are key stakeholders that provide input for the school needs assessment through data collected from the student’s performance based on the time spent during the day providing instruction, assisting in achieving individual student goals, and providing resources that are available to help increase student achievement, it is just as important to involve students, guardians, and the community. Parent and/or guardian stakeholders have key roles when assisting their students outside of the classroom. It is important to join forces with parents and/or guardians to assist in providing teachers with other details from outside the classroom and provide additional feedback to the principal that will help in establishing a solid school budget. In addition, this will allow the parent and/or guardian to have a better understanding of how important it is to receive feedback that will help students complete assignments outside of the classroom. According to Maria Birbili & Katerina Tzioga, Involving parents in children’s assessment: lessons from the Greek context (Nov 2013) “when parents are provided with opportunities to observe, record, and reflect on their children’s learning they are able both to see the ‘acts and products’ of learning and to appreciate their child’s progress, efforts, successes, and achievements over time”. Students are another important part of including them in a school needs assessment because they are the front line of what can make or break the success of the school. The feedback we receive from students is vital because it is live data. Information from what their struggles are to what makes them successful is critical information. They are the ones that can give feedback on what their individual needs are, and those needs can be compared to others. This information is a key component in establishing a budget that can be successful for students and teachers to have the information and resources they need to continue to work towards student achievement. The community is where the principal can ask for resources by getting monetary or tangible donations that will help in each of the classrooms. For example, I am a teacher who is always in need of school supplies, craft materials, 3D printing filament, etc. So if we involve the community and ask them what they offer in their businesses then we can ask specifically for those needs. It is always important to involve as many stakeholders as possible because it will allow for additional funding in areas that are more critical.
