Christopher Sperry SUSTN 353 15 December 16:00 2024 Final Analysis on Default Framing (Photos 1 & 2 respectively: Great Value Southern Sweet Tea Flavoring, and my cat Luke) After a long day of taking exams on Wednesday, I typically a good tall glass of water with some flavoring added into it and snuggling up with my cat Luke at home. As I was looking at the packaging of the flavoring for my water, I realized that this would be a great item to go over. Luke was gracious enough to read the bottle with me at the time of the photograph but was definitely contemplating stealing my water when I took the second photo, which shows the products front label, Great Value Southern Sweet Tea Drink Enhancer. The parent company of the product, Great Value, however, is Walmart, which is known to bring merchandise to customers at inexpensive prices, at the cost of other things. This, however, comes at a cost towards other things such as sustainable actions. If you look closely at Photograph 1, you will see that both Luke and I found that there are two symbols on the bottle that contradict each other. The first label states that the bottle can be recycled, but the second label states that the label itself is not recyclable. By emphasizing this amount of personal responsibility onto the consumer, Walmart is allowing the consumer to believe that they are able to contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle without necessarily addressing the larger impact the product has on the environment.
Having been marketed off to consumers as a cheap and convenient way to enhance one’s drinks, people tend to believe that they are able to reduce the amount of single-use plastic associated with pre-packaged drinks such as Gatorade or Powerade. At a broader level however, the product’s packaging and distribution process can contribute more towards he degradation of the environment. By emphasizing the individual waste of the wrapper, the drink enhancer neglects the bigger environmental issue of the product’s life. To better market this product, a better way of going about this product in terms of a more sustainable approach would first be an assessment of the product’s impact on the environment including but not limited to it’s transportation, creation, and disposal. Furthermore, by implementing eco-friendly practices such as fully recyclable products including it’s labeling would help enhance any commitment made by Walmart towards sustainability. By taking a step forward in this, Walmart would therefore be advocating and participating in an industry wide initiative to make changes that promote sustainable action in terms of the default framing system. True sustainable action after all does not start at an individual level but on an industrial level of commitment.
