(2.5 points; chapter 4) Give at least two reasons that Toyota’s Kanban system has not been universally adopted by industry in America. 1. The Kanban system was designed specifically for Totyota. 2. The Kanban system was built out of necessity after WWII in Japan. Japan was operating out of scarcity while America was operating out of abundance with a very healthy post World War economy. Question 2: JIT (2.5 points, chapter 4) List three ways in which the intrinsic rigidity of JIT is compensated for in practice. 1. The use of a capacity buffer (having less work scheduled than what is available at full capacity) 2. The reduction of setup times by beginning setup before job was ready to start. 3. The use of a two-shifting schedule which consists of two shifts separated by a down period allowing for catch up work and machine maintenance Question 3 Pull Systems (2.5 points, chapter 4) In a serial production line, at which station (first, last, middle, etc.) would it be best to have the bottleneck in a push system? Where in a pull system? Explain your reasoning. In a push system the bottleneck is better at the front end so it can be more easily scheduled for, and it prevents excess WIP building up. The downstream would also be better fit to handle whatever it receives from the bottleneck. In a pull system the location is not as important since job releases are dependent on the WIP in the system. Releases are in front of the bottleneck.
