1-3 Journal: Company Research and Selection Alex Seamster Company Overview United Parcel Service Inc., more commonly known as UPS, started from humble beginnings with two teenage entrepreneurs , Claude Ryan and Jim Casey, and a $100 loan in Seattle, WA in 1907 (ups.com). Now the company is one of the world’s leaders in premier package delivery services as a global supply chain management solution, and has moved headquarters to Atlanta, GA with Carol B. Tome as Chief Executive Officer (money.cnn.com). In 2022, the total revenue reported by UPS was $100.3 billion and delivered on average of 24.3 million packages per day (ups.com). Customer Base The service range of customers for UPS expands over 200 countries and territories. The company services both everyone from small “mom and pop” business to major Fortune Global 500 companies to individual households and families. UPS self-reported that in 2022 they delivered packages for 1.6 million shipping customers to 11.1 million delivery customers each day. This makes for a total of 6.2 billion packages handled in 2022 (ups.com). Obstacle In just recent days, a UPS driver has gone viral on TikTok after he posted a transparency video breaking down his pay as an UPS employee. The driver was Skyler Stutzman who is based out of Oregon and has nearly 250k followers on the social media site. Stutzman reported that his earnings pre-tax for one week was $2,004 with a pay rate of $44.26 per hour. This video was viewed more than 12 million times on the platform. Viewers were shocked at the rate of pay and many expressed jealously ((Hauari, 2023). This comes after CEO Carol Tome made a statement
that “ When you look at total compensation, by the end of the new contract, the average UPS full- time driver will make about $170,000 annually in pay and benefits," and “for all part-time union employees that are already working at UPS, by the end of this contract, they will be making at least $25.75 per hour while receiving full health care and pension benefits."( Hauari, 2023). I feel as though the transparency on the CEO behalf is wonderful and progressive due to the history in general over the years on this topic, but unapproved social media post can be potentially damaging for a company while this time it was taken in a positive way it may not be next time.
