Discussion Thread: Cost Concepts, Budgeting, and Control

Hey Paul,
I appreciated reading your response to this week's discussion since it allowed me to hear your
perspective on identifying and distinguishing between the five broad categories of cost behavior.
I appreciated how you properly explained the many forms of costs throughout your discussion.
It is critical to understand your costs, particularly where they originate from. When there is a
budget deficit, a manager's primary task is to reduce these various expenses. Fixed expenses do
not vary since the corporation has put them in stone, thus floor managers do not need to pay
close attention to them. They may benefit from minor adjustments such as waste reduction, but
there is often no immediate modification that can be done. Throughout your essay, I learned
about the five different forms of cost behavior. It categorizes costs into five groups based on how
they act about output: variable, fixed, semi-fixed, semi-variable, and curvilinear costs (Bragg,
2023). Academic papers stress the need to understand cost behavior to conduct effective strategic
planning and budgeting. Managers may use this knowledge to better allocate resources and
execute cost control measures by anticipating how costs will vary as company activities change.
It is also important to understand the biblical perspective on all of this; a scripture verse that I
believe relates to this topic is Proverbs 30:24-25, "There are four things that are little on the
earth, But they are exceedingly wise: The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their
food in the summer." (NKJV). This verse emphasizes that if we are intelligent, we shall invest
our lives in Jesus Christ. He will become the focal point of our entire existence. Overall, I
thoroughly liked reading your response to our discussion.

Hey Anne,
I loved reading your contribution to this week's discussion since it helped me to understand your
point of view while evaluating alternate ideas. What are the four sorts of charges that may be
applicable? I enjoyed how you clearly outlined the four sorts of expenses while assessing
different projects. While reading your contribution to the conversation, I discovered that the four
significant forms of costs when considering alternative projects are avoidable costs, sunk costs,
incremental costs, and opportunity costs. Some people may find it worthwhile to pay the amount,
while others may not. We pay extra for advantages such as convenience, exclusivity, or limited
supply. Fixed expenses are largely predictable costs, allowing you to prepare ahead of time
(Cleverley & Cleverley, 2018). Another form of cost is avoidable cost, which refers to monetary
savings achieved by reducing a cost in part or completely. Due to the surge in healthcare
expenditures, there have been discussions about avoiding unnecessary costs. Avoidable costs are
significant to alternative projects since most organizations seek cost-effective ways to supply
what their patients require while still having enough cash to continue providing resources to their
providers to accomplish their work. It is also critical to grasp the biblical viewpoint on all of this;
a scripture phrase that I feel is relevant to this issue is Proverbs 15:22, "Without counsel, plans
go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established" (NKJV). The relevance of this
passage is that we all need to remember and implement it when we create plans for our lives.
Overall, I thoroughly appreciated reading your contribution to this topic.

As a Tactical Accounts Manager, errors in the allocation of deductions to policy premiums are a serious concern that could have far-reaching consequences for the department and the company as a whole.
There could be a number of reasons why deductions are too small. One reason could be that employees are unaware of the true cost of their insurance premiums and thus fail to deduct the appropriate amount from their pay. This could be due to a lack of communication or education about the true cost of insurance, or to changes in premium amounts that are not effectively communicated to employees.
Errors in deduction allocation can have a significant impact on the department and the company as a whole. It can result in client complaints, decreased customer satisfaction, and, ultimately, lost revenue. It can also result in higher administrative costs as employees work to correct errors and resolve client complaints.

Your employees have been incurring a lot of overtime lately for staffing special events. You cannot afford to pay time-and-a-half for overtime, so you make a deal with your employees: if they work fifty hours this week, you will let them work thirty hours the next week and take a long weekend. They are happy and you are happy.
Discussion Questions
1. Is this legally acceptable? Why? What can happen if you get caught doing this? Which agency monitors businesses and what might happen if you are reported? What legislation are you violating?
2. What is the best way to handle this staffing challenge?

The company hires independent contractors to perform a variety of customer-focused tasks, such as complaint resolution, for its client, the financial services industry.
We get to know all of our contractors because, as the chief of staff puts it, "vetting of such contractors is very important because of the nature of our client's business. We've even watched contractors develop. We have one contractor with us today who started at 16 and is now a manager at 26."
The contractors are introduced to more than just the chief. Some of the contractors have been working with a customer for so long that if they leave, the crew must continue.
This company has 4,000 contractors and 226 full-time employees, so succession planning must take both into consideration.
When working with a contractor, it usually recommends to its financial services clients that they add the contractor to their at-risk registry.
The client will hire a full-time employee, and the contractor will learn new skills.

Farmers whose crops were destroyed by the hurricane were much worse off, but farmers whose crops were not destroyed benefited from the hurricane. Why did this occur? What information would you need about the market for bananas in order to assess whether farmers as a group were hurt or helped by the floods?
PART B: Explain why the following might be true: A drought in the Caribbean raises the total revenue that producers receive from the sale of coffee, but a drought only in Grenada reduces the total revenue that Grenadian producers receive.

Employees’ poor health habits Under use of preventative services High-cost catastrophic cases and end-of-life care Poor employee understanding of how to use the plan Overuse of care through employees seeking inappropriate care Poor quality or misuse of care because primary, specialty, and facility care are not integrated.
