1 6-1 Harvard Business Review Simulation and Journal Mykalah Draine Southern New Hampshire University BUS-400-Q2767: Driving Business Opportunities Instructor Christopher Anderson Sunday, December 3, 2023
2 When conducting the Harvard simulation, the first trial I was focused on trying to please others despite the best interest of the business. During the first trial, I can admit that I was biased regarding the hiring practices across the generations. Through trial one, I was focused on remaining fully family-owned as that is what the business was built on. In the end, those decisions ended up being part of the downfall of the company. In regard to improving the hiring practices, some ideas that were implemented during the simulation trials two and three were to be more open to hiring “outsiders”. In other words, I had decided to be more open to “outsiders” due to the notion that even though they may not be family, they value the company and want what’s best for it as well. Another positive outlook to this decision is that because of the hiring of “outsiders”, we are essentially bringing in another outside perspective, instead of a closed mindset. There are a few actions that the company could implement in order to improve in certain areas more specifically in diversity, community, and social initiatives. One idea that was chosen during the second trial that carried on into the third and final simulation trial was to expand the company’s horizons. This meant that instead of sticking to the same product that the company was first built on, people’s needs change, and with it so does the company. Another idea that I adopted was that it is okay to diversify and adapt. The world is constantly changing, and as I have stated previously, people’s needs change with those adaptations. As a result, in order to stay relevant and to stay in business, the company must pay attention to those needs and operate accordingly to them. In terms of social and community initiatives, the company could reach out and conduct more volunteer opportunities. This way the company is in the good eye of the public and therefore builds a bond with the people. These are just a few ways that the company can improve instead of remaining in the same position.
